I have to admit, although I am not thrilled to see Ishant and/or VRV Singh in the squad ahead of more proven medium pacers, I will find it facinating to watch them bowl. I enjoy watching raw pace bowlers (especially Indian ones) bowl.

I like the way VRV has been developing. Both the bowlers seem decent future prospects for India but not yet fully ready for international cricket.

Munaf patel and VRV singh has the worst fitness among indian pace bowlers. You cannot count on them going through the whole series, without getting injured.
They are more like shoaib akhtar in that aspect, albeit the lack of wickets. :)

Excuse me ,the guy is their best batsman ,how can they throw him out .Sure his tantrums are irritating .But doesn't he rightful in asking for the players he wants in the team ? The guy simply can't remain as a muppet captain .Or he is not interested in the politics . Very straightforward approch .Pakistani team selction was horrible .They couldn't supply adequate replacements for the injured /sick players .

If he doesn't want to be the captain, why does he accept the vice captain job ? Is he not aware that he might be asked to lead if for some reason the captain was unable to do so ?

And lastly Younis is not the first captain in the world to not get the players of his choice, so I dont know what is the fuss about. Beside Rauf isn't any better than Rao.

Younis khan appears to be a very immature, irresponsible and selfish cricketer. I dont understand why PCB want him to make the captain or vice captain. Give this to anyone but this guy. He has no leadership quality he should be thrown out of the Pakistan team.

Kamran Abbasi's column summarizes my feelings:

Much of this ambivalence, however, is entirely explained by his bizarre relationship with the Pakistan captaincy. The first refusal could be explained by principle. The second explained by emotion. Many Pakistan fans have been exasperated by these decisions. How could somebody refuse the national leadership role? This third hesitation will eradicate any sympathy for Younis's stance. The question is a simple one: What matters more to Younis, his pride or the opportunity to rescue this Test series for his country?

Let it go, Captain Khan. Your pride infuses your play but your pride is also diffusing your senses. The best answer to people in the squad or in the PCB who might undermine you is to show them what you are capable of on the field. That is where you win the argument, not in press conferences, syndicated columns, or air-conditioned boardrooms.

Have a feeling that things have been a bit overblown. I'm pretty sure that Younis will captain in the next match if Malik is not fit.

Hope one of Asif or Gul are fit as well, as we really don't stand much of a chance without them.

A new angle to the India-Pakistan pissing match:

"My sick bay is more full than your sick bay."

To help their side's cause in this matter, the following Indians sacrificed their
fitness: Zaheer Khan, Sreesanth (matched his big words with big action, injured himself
for a looong time), RP, Munaf, Sachin,Dhoni.

Whatever it takes!!!
so if Sachin and Dhoni both are not fit, this XI will take the field?

Gambhir
Jaffar
Dravid
Ganguly
Laxman
Yuvraj
Karthik
bowlers.

Well, at least we get 3 left handers in the top 7 instead of the token 1 we seem to take in every other game...

  5. Laxman
  6. Yuvraj
  7. Gambhir
  8. Pathan

I hope India manage to retain the 1-0 series lead (or do better!) in the cricket test series. It will give them useful confidence when playing the Aussies down under. Also, good idea to try out Yuvraj for the third test to see if he has matured enough to be playing test cricket.

Fast men fiddle with Fitness!

The Indian team have plenty of reasons to worry on the eve of the third Test against Pakistan and the upcoming series against Australia Down Under. The injuries to opening bowlers has forced the selectors to delay the 16member team to Australia. The `unexpected' injuries to Zaheer Khan and Munaf Patel also made the selectors to bring in Irfan Pathan, VRV Singh and Ishant Sharma for Bangalore Test, starting on Saturday.

The problem has once again raised questions about the fitness aspect. One reason for this could be the heavy dose of international cricket. It is also possible that some bowlers are hiding injuries and are being exposed. Take the case of 24-yearold Munaf Patel, who made his Test debut against England in 2006. He has been plagued by injuries and has been in and out of the team.

Now with Zaheer, Sreesanth, RP Singh and Agarkar joining the injury list, India have been hit hard by injuries.

The fear of losing a place, leads to players hiding injuries. Here physiotherapist John Gloster's role is important. He has to give an honest report.

The BCCI should be strict and monitor the bowlers' progress, particularly the fitness aspect. Some Indian bowlers hide injuries. "As a result they are sometimes being exposed," he said.

We should find a proper system to monitor the bowlers. There should be some sort of back-up system that can help the bowlers to be free of injuries. It all comes to bowling technique. Sometimes, trainers don't follow the bowlers, they run into bad habits and make technical flaws which result in injuries. There should be a specialist coach.

But you might ask how did Kapil Dev avoid injuries? It is because Kapil was basically a swing bowler. He was not fast.

If you see the current bowlers, most of them like Sreesanth, RP, Zaheer and Irfan touch 130 plus. As a result the bowler has to take care of his fitness.

The best way to tackle this issue is to follow the rotation policy.

Sometimes it is not fair for the fast bowlers to bowl in and out every alternate day. There is too much stress on the body, particularly on Indian wickets. The best way is to rotate bowlers so that they could be fresh.

It is better to identify bowlers for the longer and shorter version of the game. For instance Munaf is suited for Test matches. When he started his career, he began bowling with 140. But now, he is struggling. He should be preserved for the longer version of the game only. He is not an ODI specialist.

The Wheel is Forever
I hate spinners but it would be fascinating to watch India go in with three spinners, one seamer and one Ganguly. :p

I'd particularly like to see how Kumble would handle that.
