The Wheel is Forever
What in the world are Sri Lanka going to do when Murali is gone? The man means more to SL than Hadlee did to NZ, and I never thought I'd say that.

If they're lucky they might get a Kumble or a Bedi around the time. Warne and Murali are both, naturally, once-in-two-or-three-generation type bowlers (or twice, as we've oddly got with those 2 at the same time ) though of course Murali might very well be a once-in-history bowler.

In any case, I genuinely think Murali could go on for another 3 or 4 years at least. I honestly do hope and think it is a realistic prospect that he gets 1,000 Test wickets - better still would be 1,000 in deserving Tests (ie, not Bangladesh, post-WC2003-Zimbabwe and ICC WXI matches).

He's bowled no worse in this Test, accuracy-wise, than ever, and though he doesn't seem to be spinning it as he was a year ago (that evident both in Australia and here) he's still more than capable of being every bit as effective despite that, at least in Sri Lanka, it seems. Although this is hardly The Ritz of a batting-line-up (more of which I'll probably comment on tomorrow after the tail is blown away).

And even without him they've been more than competetive - he was once described, accurately IMO, as "the difference between Sri Lanka being a good team and a very good team".

He is also, afaik, the only spinner in the history of cricket to have consistently carried his country's attack for such a period of time. Phenomenal.

Would love to know what Ravi Bopara has done to deserve a Test call-up. Only 6 FC tons and an average under 40 hardly spells success.

If he is one of the top 6 batsmen available then England are in deep trouble, not just now but for the long term.

He's technically very good, young and basically picked on potential. I don't agree with the selection and there are players much more deserving but it's not like they are scraping the barrell to play him - they want him in there.

Jason I respect your knowledge of Sri Lankin grounds but I say England are heading for a first innings lead of at least 150 and probably more unless Murali turns in a miracle performance. The pace bowlers are not in form.
