Bopara at 8 instead of either Broad or Anderson, anyone?

Make your mind up, which is it?

Either way, there's no way on Earth we should be EVER be thinking about:
a) playing Bopara with bowling in mind or
b) playing 5 bowlers with Flintoff unfit

It simply has to be a top-seven of:
Cook
Vaughan
Shah (or maybe Bell but I bloody well hope not)
Pietersen
Collingwood
Bell
Prior

Didn't Caddick have some success at Kandy in 2001? I know he swung it sometimes, but lift was more his thing. Still, Kandy 6 years ago may not = Kandy now, so I'm not claiming a lot really. fwiw my take on the current selection is that Sidebottom isn't playing because the selctors have already decided he'll play next week, whereas Broad isn't playing because they've decided he isn't.
The surface in Kandy in 2000\01 was a very odd one, with a ridge in the pitch because they'd relocated the location of the pitches and hence the left half of one former pitch and the right half of another former pitch, with a "bit" in between, formed the "new" pitch. This gave some assistance to seam.

Other than that, TBH I can't think of a terribly large number of Kandy Tests I've seen that have offered anything to both spin and seam.

In any case, Caddick's success was not quite what it might seem through the mists of time - his five wickets were Jayasuriya driving a nothing ball straight to cover; Jayawardene (after a sparkling century) top-edging a somewhat ambitious attempted pull to mid-wicket; Vaas and Zoysa out to average tailender shots; and Jayasuriya caught at slip on the half-volley.

Gough was the one who really bowled superbly that Test; even White (whose match-figures were a relatively unremarkable 29.1-112-4) bowled far better. The two swing (more of the reverse than conventional variety) merchants.

The thought did briefly cross my mind, but Ravi as one of four bowlers really is asking for trouble imo. In know that Prior at 7 followed by the four bowlers probably means our last 5 will go for less than 50, but I see that as slightly the lesser of two evils.

Cripes, what with the 2 reports today (thanks Gelman :p) I'd completely forgotten about this.

Looks like it's been a decent day for Hoggard and an ever-improving one from MSP. Bit of a shame about Anderson and TBH annoying about Harmison being injured again - no-one's ever going to see the truth about him if he keeps falling down.

Shame Vaughan rates Pietersen's bowling above his own too...

Do you think Steve Wayward-Harmison's improved that much?

A word of advice, don't even try to look at Kandy's history. They had to rebuild the entire ground and stadium because of the Tsunami that totally wrecked that area.

Our tail can hang around ...
Time spent at the wicket after 19 Tests (I have picked 19 Tests because Panesar and Anderson have just reached that number)

Anderson - 123 runs 63.3 overs 9 hrs 27 mins
Hoggard - 95 runs - 77 overs 9 hrs 13 mins
Harmison - 111 runs - 52.3 overs 7 hrs 49 mins
Panesar - 115 runs - 50.5 overs 6 hrs 49 mins

Sri Lanka's Test side will change during the series after it emerged that Sanath Jayasuriya will retire from Test cricket at the end of the first Test. Jayasuriya, a veteran of 109 Tests and scorer of 6,885 runs at an average of 40.02 will continue to play one-day cricket.

In an attempt to inject youth into their side the Sri Lankan selectors have also invited Chaminda Vaas the chance to retire after the first Test. Vaas, who will make his 100th Test appearance in Kandy on Saturday, turned down the offer and wants to fight for a place in the side. He too will continue to play one-day cricket.

Where did you read this ? Any links....

I think Sanath's second retirement will definitely help Vandort and Tharanga to establish a new opening partnership for SL...Warnapura may be a consideration in the future but needs to get some runs under his belt... I am hopeful that TT Sam or Kapugedera (preferably Kapugedera) get selected for the second Test ...although Kaushal Silva is worthy of some consideration (although his keeping needs to improve)...

I hope they allow Vaas a chance to get his 100th Test at Kandy without keeping him waiting....I hope Sujeewa De Silva gets a look in possibly ahead of Dilhara..

Even God cannot save Sri Lanka if Tsunami hits Kandy (which is in Central Sri Lanka at an altitude IIRC of over 7-8000 feet ) Because then theoretically most of Sri Lanka would have been under Water long before....

I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend, and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope...

The joy of English batsmanship. Bell's innings sounded particularly horrific, but I can't see how he's being helped by oscillating between 3 & 6. And, once again, the sheer idiocy of present-day scheduling, as England "prepare" for a test in 5 days time. This is going to be gruesome, isn't it.
