As for bracewell, I think he has done a wonderful job with the odi side but our test cricket has been disappointing sinc ehe came on- although lack of continual games may also have effected progress.

I reckon we can have 2 different coaches for tests and odi's. Wright or someone else for tests, but keep bracewell on for odi's.

Never knew you were a Kiwi.
Yeah I am, my dad is from Waipukurau ("Fungus River") in Hawkes Bay, so I have citizenship by descent. When I was younger I always wanted to play for New Zealand rather than England, and they were my No. 1 team before I discovered Zimbabwe and became even more contrary.

Oh. This is so funny. I was having a few drinks with my cricket team mates the other day, and no less than THREE of them were from the little ****ter of a town that is Waipukurau. Small world, and the New Zealand world is even smaller still.

Fleming has been tried opening before and done a hell of a lot better than papps/cumming and would continue to do so if he was kept there. Mccullum, the only time he was given the no 3 spot in test played a great knock vs a quality attack- papps and cumming will never play an innings like that. Papps if he settles in may average 33-35, maybe even more.
But not cumming. And in the rare occassion that both of our openers do well we will be batting at 2 runs an over, put pressure on the middle order to increase rate if we want to force a test win and fail again.

I don't think cumming is completely useless or he wouldn't have made it this far, but I just don't think he is a test class opener by today's standards. I hope he proves me wrong this season.

Its a real shame jesse Ryder has attitude problems because his domestic first class record sh*ts on most of the top order batsmen we have
1. Fleming was tried as an opener and it worked for a year because he was in the form of his life. He then receded a little and his weakness against the new ball was easier to exploit. he is not an opener, never has been, never will be, end of story

2. McCullum has only played one good innings at number three. Don't judge players based on one score.

3. Papps and Cumming will be better openers than Fleming. There is a reason they're specialist openers you know, its because they're good at it and have less technical weaknesses to get exploited. Sadly they have less talent. Without a massive technical restructure, Fleming or any other middle order player will never be an opener and it takes time to build a new technique so there's no point using Fleming. I know you think technique is over-rated but it is a very very important part of opening. if your technique has big fat gaping weaknesses in it then any half decent bowler is going to kill you, regardless of your talent.

4. I'd rather tick along at two an over and get to lunch than have Fulton and Fleming out there after 30 minutes of the innings with a new ball directed at them. And yes Cumming and Papps are getting out anyway but I beileve they aren't achieving their full potential yet and if they do then we will have an adequite opening combination.

5. Cumming is borderline test class, the coming season or two will show us whether he is or isn't.

6. I hate Jesse Ryder. We need extremely talented batsman and God had to go and give someone like him the required talent. Big stuff up IMO. (This comment is not very serious BTW)

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Pollock left out. Interesting. I would have him ahead of Nel TBH but there you go.

And Harris is a better batsman than Nel too, so why is Nel above him?

I highly doubt it. They are specialist openers but really so was fleming, he always comes in so early- it makes no difference.

As for technique- just look at sehwag, people keep talking about his weaknessess but look how successful he is as a test opener.

Look forward to the first test. Happy if I can see 50-3 NZ batting first in the first session

'Cos Nel >>>>> Harris with t' ball.

But :wallbash: at Pollock being dropped. Could understand it in Pakistan but makes no sense at home. None at all.

I'd back Pollock to score more runs than Amla, even if he couldn't bowl! Not to mention the fact that he's an infinitely better bowler than Nel who bowls a similar style to him anyway. Dire selections.

NZ select Pollock for first Test

You mean getting dropped because of poor form and getting found out? Whether you like it or not, batsmen must have a decent technique to survive international cricket. Shahid Afridi is very talented but his technique is poor and he is a shadow of the batsman he could have been.

No Fleming was not a specialist opener. Richardson always took some time to get out, Vincent when he was reasonable did okay. Fleming himself got made to open. Also Fleming when he has come in early it hasn't been straight from the first ball. its at least been a few overs in on average and Fleming is more vulnerable the earlier in he is. Have you noticed that annoying little jerky movement where he chases the ball and gets an edge to the keeper/slips? No opener can afford to have that kind of weakness.

Nope, we have to stick with the specialist opening options we have and keep our main strength, the middle and lower order, as poerful as possible. Having the likes of Fleming, Fulton etc open won't help the middle order strength and they'll fail just like the current openers have so far. I expect these two to be decent at least.
