Bracken's test chances

I think Bracken would have to wait to get a test call-up and he would have to work on his test bowling a bit more (he needs develop a good bouncer more than anything else) and if he does well for NSW in the Pura cup this season he should surely be in contention for a place in the test team.

if we are in trouble i wouldnt expect Bracks to do 'something out of nothing' id prefer a Midge... just my view

Bracken isn't near the Test side thanfully, and there are plenty of bowlers who are ahead of him.

Yeah, I know it's frowned upon here but I'd like to see him eased into international cricket in the one-day side for abit before we start thinking about him for Tests. Granted it's a completely different format, but it is the big time and I want to see him become a fixture there first especially over the summer. Was rather disappointed they didn't play him in India tbh.
If he's a good OD bowler (which I seem to recall he somewhat is) it makes perfect sense, really. The only thing that's silly is when you pick players who are poor at OD cricket and good at FC for ODIs "to ease him into the big-time". Because that's overwhelmingly likely to backfire, and has any number of times over here.

I am resigned to the fact Johnson will play. But as long as MacGill plays as well, then I will be content.

So the team looks like this...

Hayden
Jaques (Appears to have done enough to warrant a spot.)
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Watson/Symonds (depending on Watson's fitness.)
Gilchrist
Lee -(Batting T Av 21 FC Av 18)
Johnson -Bowling great and on FC batting av might even be a no. 8 (Batting FC Av 24)
Clark

With the last bowling spot up for grabs....

McGill -Old and out of form
Hogg -Old, in from in ODI's and can bat, but does the side above need any extra batting strength.
Bracken -In ODI form but do we need two leftys?
Tait - If fit would be my choice in a 5 man bowling attack (counting Watson)
Hilfenhaus -Once we had won the series and there was a gap worth a trundle.

Provided there are no injuries, that should be the Test team.

I think Hogg should now be considered as Australia's no.2 spin option in test cricket after MacGill, Bailey is looking hopeless Cullen and Hauritz are good in 50 over cricket but they are nowhere near test standard atm.
So if MacGill doesn't perform, then i don't think there is any harm in giving Hoggy a decent run in test match cricket.

i agree

and that means in the 2nd test of the Border-Gavaskar series we could have a bowling attack of

Lee
Clark
Symonds
MacGill
Hogg

though i doubt it if Midge continues to bowl well and we'll just stick to Macca

I rate Symo as a better batsman than Watto
i also rate Symo as a better bowler than Watto

Yes, the harm is that he will be ineffective and give away runs while taking away overs from bowlers who could do a better job. MacGill is easily Australia's #1 spinner at the moment, while Hogg, Cullen, Bailey and Hauritz are all miles behind. If MacGill doesn't perform well enough then you shouldn't pick a sub-standard bowler just because he is a spinner, and I think Tait or Hilfenhaus would be bowling options if MacGill was ineffective.

If Australia ever field that bowling attack I will do myself serious bodily harm.
