I can't believe that a couple of people are thinking about leaving oram out
Are you serious? Even if he doesn't bowl he is the best no 6 batsman we have.
Look at his test average and the opposition he has done it against. How can you say he can't play no 6 when he played that awesome century vs aus when our top order fell apart as usual. what about all his superb knocks vs south africa?
Both him and styris are automatic selection I'd go as far as to say Oram is a more reliable test batsman than Fleming is.
The problem with this test team is the openers imo. Name another quality test side that has two openers who are gonna struggle to keep the run-rate above 3? we are living in the past. To win test series vs good sides you have to take charge with your batting. If these openers were as good as mark richardson I would not complain. I'm happy with papps there but not along with cumming. He is a 30 average player at test level at best and thats just no point especially when he adds no momentum.
Just surviving for sessions without scoring runs is not useful.
If we want to beat sides like Sa and England away from home we have to think outside the square. I'd have opened with mccullum and papps. Say what you want but over 10 tests I have no doubt Mccullum would do a better job than cumming opening the batting.
Anyway he has been selected so good luck to him anyway.
My team for the first test from this squad (bracewell already said cumming and papps opening so I won't change that)
1.Papps
2.Cumming
3.Fleming
4. Vincent/Taylor
5.Styris
6. Oram
7. Mccullum
8. Vettori
9. Bond
10. Gillespie/Patel (depends on pitch)
11. Martin
or maybe pick both vincent and taylor and leave out gillespie and patel.
