The Battle of the Commentators

I've only read A Lot of Hard Yukka, which easily the finest cricket book of its kind, but I understand that Hughes hasn't quite scaled the heights with any of his subsequent offerings.
Definitely a houseplant to avoid in dark alleys  :

Seriously tho, I enjoyed Yakking Around The World just as much as its predecessor; Hughes (like Ed Smith) is a sportsman who's also a genuine writing talent too. Smith might be cleverer (his On and Off The Field is required reading IMHO) but Hughes has the funnier stories.

Battle Two

Mark Taylor vs Jonathan Agnew

Its another battle of Television versus Radio as the young-up'n'commer from the Antipodes takes on the silver tongued broadcaster from the BBC.

Mark Taylor

Playing Career: 104 tests for Australia, 7500 test runs scored. First Australian captain to win a series in the West Indies for 23 years
Commentating Pedigree: Retired from test cricket to enter the Channel 9 commentary box shortly after his retirement and has been seen as one of many developing young commentators from the Southern Hemisphere.
Other:* Elected as a NSW representative on the Board of Cricket Australia in 2004
* Australian of the Year - 1999
* Appears regularly on the Cricket Show with Simon O'Donnell

Jonathan Agnew

Playing Career: Most notably successful as a first class cricketer for Leicestershire. An out and out bowler, he played in 3 unsuccessful test matches taking 4 wickets at 93.25
Commentating Pedigree: Started commentating for BBC Leicester in the off-season whilst still playing back in 1990; he was appointed the BBC's Cricket Correspondent in 1991 and has continued to commentate for the BBC, and in particular the Test Match Special programme
Other: * Has provided commentary for cricket computer games; including International Cricket Captain and Brian Lara Crickeet
* His line "He couldn't quite get his leg over" on Ian Botham's hit wicket dismissal in an England vs West Indies test match in 1991 was voted "Best Piece of Sports Commentary of All Time" by BBC Radio 5 Live

For Agnew. TBH I have him quite annoying recently, because he seems to be getting very negative and depressive about England, and the tone of his voice suggest he wasn't enjoying himself, even though he professed to be. but I think it's largely due to him doing too much commentary in the last few months and I'm sure he'll be back refreshed for the Sri Lanka tests. Mind you it might just be because England haven't been too hot.

I actually rate Taylor's acumen, he does at least make an effort to analyse what's going on rather than just telling us what we've seen, but can't be doing with his voice. If a strangulated hernia could talk it would sound like Tubby. Has to be the dulcet Aggers.

Ther's none better than Kerry O'Keefe and Harsha Bogle together on the ABC. Forget your TV commentators, radio is where its at for the best commentary.

Aggers ftw, but have to say that despite finding Tubby's voice annoying, I think his knowledge of the game is pretty damn good.

I have to say, I agree with you Burgey. I quite enjoy listening to Mark Taylor's commentary - he knows his stuff, that's for sure. Quite why he sounds like he's eaten half a ton of razor blades, I don't know.

Anyway - Aggers one vote away from an early victory here.
