To be fair Yuvraj's penultimate over didn't exactly get smashed, he gave three wides away but the batsmen didn't connect with him that well.

I'm sure it's a lot easier in hindsight to choose who to bowl the last over...
I'd agree with there if the decision was Yuvraj v Agarkar.. but Powar still had an over to go and he's been bowling well. The Agarkar oversight was fair enough, but the Powar oversight was odd.

From an England perspective, nice to see handy contributions from players that are successful on the domestic scene in one-day cricket, admittedly it is only one game.
Owais Shah managed his maiden ODI ton, Mascarenhas smashing that final over for 30, someone who has performed consistently for Hants over the years, and Luke Wright with an impressive debut 50, doing what he has been doing all year for Sussex.

180 runs in the last 20 overs and we think we can do with four bowlers. Bah !
4 bowlers on form is one thing. 3 and scraps is another. The REAL bowlers didn't do badly at all.

131 runs at 4.52 from Khan Chawla and Powar, 177 runs at 8.43 from the rest.

Exactly.

Another 5th crappy bowler (theoretically, if they're not in the team ahead of AA, they're worse (not true I know)) would have been pounded too.

I hate Munaf Patel. If he actually gave a crap, and got himself fit India would have a decent ODI bowling line-up.

Play RP or Sree ahead of AA FFS.

That's the thing, there's those two (Fred & Bopara) plus Trescothick if he's ever right again, plus there's now Wright doing well in his first game.

In the past Shah would have been a regular but these days I think he's just not quite good enough. Obviously like now there'll be occasions when there's a run of injuries and he'll come in.
I don't see Tres figuring again. And if Fred can't turn his arm for 10 overs without turning his ankle, then I don 't see him playing much either.

What we seem to have is a lot of competition for 4 to 7 - KP, Collingwood, Shah, Bopara, Flintoff & Wright, based on what we've seen today - and a problem with the openers, especially with Cook's performances deteriorating horribly after the 1st game. You could see a top 7 of Bell, Prior/Mustard, Bopara, KP, Collingwood, Shah & Wright doing well. Maybe swap Bopara & Wright, if you prefer.

The one thing I'd add about Shah is how much his confidence may benefit from today's innings. At present, he's lucky to be in the side given an overall avage of 22 before it. But he wouldn't be the first player to have a career kickstarted by one good knock. He was also our best bat in the ODIs vs WI, fwiw.

Back to today's game, as long as India aren't shellshocked by the last few overs, they should still be able to knock off the runs fairly comfortably against this England attack. The first 10 overs will be crucial. If Anderson & Broad don't make inroads, then India won't have any problems winning this one.

Ha, good stuff from England. Shah after being in and out of the international setup for so long that hundred hopefully will be a stepping stone to bigger things, Wright hmm good debut looked good buts lets see how he goes in the future since after all Ian Blackwell had a similar debut vs India in 2002 technique was found out & just went downhill. Mascarenhas innings must surely have him on the plane to South Africa was surprised he wasn't picked intially.

Its not as if AA has produced with the bat either. He's doing as badly as RP or Sree would. So in reality you're playing with 6 bats anyway.
I actually rate Sreesanth's batting as well, fwiw. Obviously hasn't produced much yet, but if he doesn't finish his career with a higher test and ODI batting average than Agarkar, I'll be highly surprised.

What a load of rubbish. Its pretty rare for a side to comfortably knock off 317, and this England bowling attack hasn't exactly been torn apart in the series so far.

EDIT: to wpdavid

I think how Collingwood and Mascarenhas go will be very important, as they are part timers but England will be hoping they can get through 15-20 overs.

Yes, I gathered.

Ah well, one of us can quote the other in a few hours time. As I said, how we use the new ball will be crucial. And my point was that it will be comfortable for India IF Broad & Anderson don't make inroads in the first 10 overs.

I dont think people seem to understand that one of the regular bowlers can also have a bad day. It is for this that the part timers are used by most teams. You need the part timers to bowl a few INSPITE OF having five regular bowlers.

When you are giving your stats you are forgetting Agarkar. He had a poor day. Here is a case where we not only have just four bowlers but even they are not good enough to bowl their complete quota.

On top of that part timers are mainly spinners or slow medium bowlers like Ganguly. You cant trust them in the death.

You have to see what hwppened in the last 20 overs and who bowled there. India were hit for 180 runs at 9 each for 20 overs after having kept England well under five for the first 30. Ifthere was another fast medium bowler capable of trying some yorkers you could have tried to keep the score down. Most ODI matches are not lost not by 70-80 runs. The margins are smaller. Its here that 15-20 runs less can make a big difference.

Thing is he did well in his first Test, then a year later he played against a woeful WI side and looked hopeless. Similarly he scored 40s and 50s against WI in the ODIs earlier and then this series he's been hopeless again til today, Wright's performance helped him out a lot and he had license to throw his bat around later on when apart from Zaheer (who he struggled badly to get away) he was fed buffet bowling.

I hope he does go on but I don't think he'll ever quite make it.

Hello. First post, but I have been reading these boards or quite a while now. Always scary to join in etc.

Anyway, been a Wright fan for a while as he used to play for my old team as a kid. Has lots of talent, only just flourishing. Haven't watched the game, cos I'm in Germany, but on TMS Gavaskar was raving about him. He said the word Brilliant several times...
