Robert Key - Wasted talent?

I've yet to see Denly but I've heard one or two non-optimists compare Denly's technique very infavourably indeed with Key's, if only in Twenty20 where technique often goes out the window.
Denly cant be all that bad a prospect for the english team if one goes by his form in the last year and a half. Consider also that there have been comparisons to Boycott in some of his first class innings. He is a rare breed, capable of batting out an entire day, in this day when young players are keen on being over aggressive and throwing away their wickets.

Really? As I say, I've yet to see Denly so much as once, and have barely taken note of domestic cricket this season, so haven't even noted his typical pace of scoring.

If he's a slow-scorer, that's highly promising. I'd had the impression up to now that he was a strokeplayer.

He is not a snail but neither is he a Trescothick or Strauss/ He will take you back to the classical English openers of old who played the balls on merit and did not bother playing some balls at all.

Think your getting Denly and Sayers mixed up tbh.

Yeah I did get a bit carried away in the promotion of Denly that I added Sayers credentials too. Sayers is Yorkshire's new kid on the block and has been having considerable success in first class competition. Denly has been doing well too but probably could do with an academy tour before being pushed onto the test scene.

Sayers is hardly a new-kid-on-the-block, though, he's been around for ages and has been a nothing player until this season. I'm very dubious of getting too keen on someone for 1 season after several of poor ones, and wouldn't want Sayers considered for even A-tours or anything until he backs it up with another good season - hopefully next year.

There is a guy who plays for Notts called Will Jefferson who had been doing the business for Essex over a few years, don't see why he should be behind Denly/Sayers/Godleman

23 is not exactly old considering the likes of Lara and Dravid started their careers then, now I am not saying Sayers is a Dravid or Lara. I am just saying it would not hurt anyone to give him a chance in tests atleast in the squad rather than revolve around players like Shah who have been given chances and seem to be supremely gifted but public sympathy seems to stretch to endless depths due to that and England never moves on to the next generation of players.

Will Jefferson/Cook was quite a good opening partnership for Essex in both the short format and long. How is Jefferson faring this season ?

Cook and Chopra could've been even better had England calls not intervened.

Shah has been incredibly unfortunate. Played just 2 Tests, did really well in his 1st.

He has every right to have been first-cab-off-the-rank as far as middle-order players are concerned since then (is 18 months ago now), and it's a fair disgrace there have ever been times he hasn't.

Key not doing his chances any harm today - 170* against Lancashire - with Strauss failing again for Middlesex.

You'll do well to note that performances in Twenty20 mean diddly squat to Richard, especially if it is an attempt to find some relevance to FC cricket or some extent List A.
Bear in mind though that I said his most notable performance was in the 20:20 semi final, but that he's done well in other one day games as well. His performance in the 20:20 semi final was notable due to the context of the innings and the high profile nature of the match, but he's done well in the FP and the Pro40 this season.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Key is a great limited overs player, and I'm not saying he should be forcing his way into the ODI team - just pointing out that he's not 'totally unsuited to requirements' as Richard claimed he was in his post.

Edit: I realise the thread has moved on a bit now... wanted to get my say though.

And Denly >>>>>>>>>>> Sayers & Jefferson. Denly plays strokes, but also doesn't throw his wicket away - case in point carrying his bat against a Hampshire attack including Warne and Clark this season.

I thought I would dig this thread to ask on your latest opinions on him playing for England again. After reading over his stats for the past 5 years or something, he is averaging around 50. He is 29, and should know his game by now. He is captain of Kent, and in my opinion will get another shot at the top level, even if he is all but forgotten.

I hope he gets another crack sometime. Think he's a few rungs down the selection ladder though.

That was a good call wasn't it?

Sayers struggling to earn a new Yorks contract now I'd imagine.

As for Key, he didn't exactly excel in 2008 (averaged 38 in all First-Class cricket) but remains in the frame as he's in the England A party.

Still think that if Strauss or Cook were to be out of the team (for whatever reason - and I really do hope that it's not having to be dropped in either case as I really do rate both of them) Key'd be the first man I'd want in TBH.
