Yeah - shocked to see so many people with Powar at #7. Would expect Chawla to bat there if India went with 5 bowlers.
Chawla is probably a better batsman but Powar is more proven in domestic and international cricket (he hasn't done much but that's still more than Chawla).

So Pathan could be called up for the remainder of this series?
Unlikely. He might be called for the series vs. Australia though....which would be a mistake considering they're going to tear him apart again.

If he is bowling well, I would probably call him up against the Tests with Pakistan, and go in with five bowlers.

I am of two minds about the five bowler theory, as Goughy presented a fantastic argument against it. But when you don't have the consistency in your top four, sometimes you need to just bear with quantity over quality.

The five-bowler theory can be applied to one-day as well as test cricket. IIRC, Goughy's argument was in the context of test cricket whereas Pathan is being discussed here as a fifth bowler in the one-day team. Pathan is far from a test call-up but he may return to the one-day team by the end of the year. What are you referring to?

He is taking wickets with (apparently) good deliveries and has (apparently) regained the swing but he is not producing consistently good displays. Hell, I'm not sure he was even the best seamer for India A in the just-concluded tour. Let's see if he can survive the Twenty20 WC.

Talking about Test cricket, sorry. Pathan is a better ODI bowler of course, but I am looking at the long term benefit that the Test team would derive from having a bowling all rounder.

Do you think Pathan would really help the test side? The seamers are doing reasonably well and striking with the new ball. Pathan will not be the same threat with the new ball in test cricket and he doesn't appear likely to pose any threat with the old ball. The current combination of six batsmen, a keeper and four bowlers seems to be working, at least for now.

Pathan's so far from the test side its not even funny. I know SS talks about ODI improvement with regards to test improvement, but Irfan isn't even going to get a look-in for the tests unless there are some serious injuries to many fast bowlers.

I'd love to see Irfan in our ODI team ahead of AA, but only if his bowling warrants it.

I wish we'd play Munaf. I know he can't bat or field, and that sucks, but the man can bowl in the pyjama game.

Hmm yeah but I'm not sure how well Munaf bowled in the last two matches - apparently, not very well. He's reportedly changed his action so you can't assume he'll be back to his best straight away.

Whatever it takes!!!

He looked as far off International class as anyone I have ever seen when I watched the practice game......

FINALLY !!! Someone else who has a major dislike of this abbreviation being overused. It serves absolutely no purpose.

Like your pick for the Indian XI against England as well.

Not the most keen follower of Indian cricket & i'm well aware of the reasons why Sehwag & Kaif are currently not in the Indian side, but has Harbhajan gone that bad that he can't even be selected in the ODI side?
Harbhjan has been useless in ODI cricket for over a year now... he's become more of a containing bowler, can keep the runs down but can't buy a wicket these days.

Come to think of it... he's been pretty useless in both forms of games for quite a while now... heard he had a bit of attitude problem... same old indian player problem, have bit of success and it gets to their head. Than they go downhill rather than getting better.

There must be a reason why the next two one-dayers are scheduled either side of the weekend. Anybody have any idea?
