That's all I'm going to say TBH.
Dire. Stop dissing McGrath just cause he has retired. I know you hate him with passion, but I'll have you know he is a legend. He might not be as fast as Pathan, but he does have better control, FYI. Even a little kid knows that, who made you a mod of such a successful cricket forum... sheesh.

I don't think we should be discussing about which team deserves to be no.2 test team atm!! Just because India won a test series against an English team which was without Freddie,Harmison and Hoggard. But there is no doubt in the fact that England is a team on a serious decline since Ashes 05 and they are no longer the no.2 test team.

I'm so shocked you said that, even to go along with the joke. You didn't catch me praising Symonds during my punishment. :p

sorry, but for me England are definately still the second best side in the world. Yes they haven't been able to build on the famous Ashes win, but come on CW we all know thats mainly due to amount of injuries England have suffered simultaneously with the batting & bowling.

England cleary once all are fit, have players that can win in any part of the world ATM.

I dont think there is a lot that English bowling department can do even with their full strength bowling attack. England Bowling was good for all through the series. England got a good batting lineup too for this series. Its a good match series. Nothing bad that england played. Just a wicket in 1st test for England changed the series result..it would have been 1-1 but now it is 1-0 .. Well fought cricket series

They haven't won any of their nine last Tests against Test-quality sides through their cricket.

That's dismal.

Whatever it takes!!!
Well, seeing as our problems came from (a) batting indiscipline and (b) wicketkeeping, I don't see how a change of bowling would have sorted that out at all. Sidebottom, Anderson and Tremlett all bowled better than some of the rubbish Harmison has served up for the last year or so, and Jones isn't going to be properly fit again.

And that is HUGE factor in the outcome in this series & that cannot be underrated. Freddie & Hoggard plus any 1 or 2 of Sidebottom, Anderson, Tremlett would have exposed India classy but ageing batting as was shown in South Africa earlier this year.

To look for excuses is to escape the point - India have just thrown off the tags of being unable to generate a decent seam attack, to play swinging balls, to leave the subcontinent, and to battle and grit things out when it's tough. England, on the other hand, are presently showing a distinct lack in the testicular department: when it gets a little bit tough we crack like South Africans.

. And you wouldn't believe just how much that sentence hurt to type.

Nah this win doesn't suddenly make them second best in the world at all. If now when they go to Australia they get beaten badly & lose to Pakistan while England on the other hand get hopefully get a relief of this injury crisis & win in SRI & NZ, what will happen then. England @ full strenght are still second best, unfortunately they haven't been able to build on their Ashes success due to all these injuries.
Injuries is not the only reason England haven't been able to build on the Ashes triumph..... In fact, it isn't even the main reason.... Not even one of the players have been as good as they were in that series since then. Logically, with the emergence of the likes of Collingwood, Cook, Panesar and Bell getting better, England ( at least in the batting side) should have been better than that 2005 Ashes line up, inspite of what happened with Tresco. I just think more and more that it was a case of that England line up playing with a lot of heart and out of their skins in that series to do so well.....

Still, I agree fully with SS' assessment of the teams and their rankings.... I was basically gonna post the exact same thing.. India have to achieve quite a bit to be called the #2 side in the world, England have had a very good 3-4 years even though things seem to be going back post Ashes 2005 and I think they are still #2 in the world, at least till one of the other contenders show enough consistency to make that spot their own.

Pfft Panesar and Bell. Panesar's overall contribution is no better than Giles' when up against anyone decent. Bell is a bit of a flat track bully, he's no more than an average Test bat. Collingwood is a bit better, but those two and Cook aren't world-beaters. They're just competent Test batsmen. Then of course there's a non-contributing Prior and no Flintoff who added a huge amount to the team in 2005 - who since then seems to have regressed to his old ways somewhat but would have still added a lot.
