Now there's talk of the squad for the one-dayers selected for the England tour. Among other (often reverse) developments, Sreesanth is replaced by Munaf Patel.

Big mistake! Munaf can't move! He's a misfit in one-dayers because of his lack of fitness on the field. In ODI's, fielding is a big issue, and the Indians have been found wanting time and again- and it's weakened them. His bowling isn't much better than those who can field and bat better. Will Vengsarkar and group ever learn?
I'm beginning to wonder whether you will ever learn that bowlers are picked for their bowling.

This is one-day cricket. Every player has to contribute in all hundred overs of the match, not just ten.

The bowler in question is not far better on bowling alone than similar bowlers, who can contribute so much more.

There will be no excuses this time for Munaf, he is fit and has undergone rehab at the MRF Pace Foundation, they obviously see him fit to play. Full fitness, no excuses about his pace either, we will see all Munaf has to offer here. The question remains, will it be enough? Sreesanth deserved to be dropped, not only for punishment of his behaviour in the Second Test but also that he does not seem to be good enough in ODIs. His List A record is awful and his ODI record is not dissimilar either.

Munaf has always been a poor fielder..dude..are u trying 2 say .. he was unfit throughout his career ??LOL.......yeah,I agree Sreesanth behaved pathetically, bowled poorly in da 2nd Test...And his One-Day stats r also very bad...he deserved 2 b dropped .. but Munaf isnt in form .. N' Irfan,Sharma,Bose all ov dem .. wud b a better choice than Munaf...he cant bat,field.....N' he isnt also in so gud form in bowling...

Munaf is our best ODI bowler. That's probably says a lot about Indian bowling at the minute, sure, but the fact is that he can be extremely effective and is very good at keeping it tight. Its unfortunate that he's a **** fielder and even worse batsman (Arjun weren't you the one calling for him in the ODI team because he could hit sixes????!!!), but he must play because he can bowl.

Who are those similar bowlers?
  • RP Singh- Better fielder. Gets decent pace, and moves the ball well off the pitch. Can hold a line and length for some time, to support the strike bowlers. Has been among the wickets in this season.
  • Ranadeb Bose- Not too quick on the field, but at least as good as Dravid or Zaheer. Been in the wickets (not the injury list) for a long time.
  • Ishant Sharma- The no-ball issues are gone, and he's a better fielder.
  • Joginder Sharma- Very effective in the middle-order, scores quickly, bowls a lot like Munaf, but is a lot less powerfully built. A rather unknown quantity, but so was Munaf when drafted into ODI's.
  • Praveen Kumar- Left out again, for some strage reason.
Even compared to the current lot, there's nothing Munaf has done that puts him far ahead of the likes of Zaheer, Sreesanth, Agarkar (selectors' favourite) or RP Singh.

There are bowlers in this ODI squad who have taken more wickets than Munaf in the same period he's played. He's been the 'best' ODI bowler for India only by default, as the others have either been out of form or out of action, and has an average over 30.

In ODI cricket, merely performing in one faculty is not enough. That's seen in most ODIs the Indians have played lately- they've been totally outplayed by the Aussies, Windies and Lankans, and even been upset by Bangladesh. The fielding of each team has been the difference, and also the versatility. In these teams, every player is effective on the field, and even the bowlers can score runs. If Munaf can bowl, their bowlers can do a lot more than that.

I have a question about Munaf's pace. Before his international selection, he was being hyped as being absolutely rapid. Was he quick in Domestic Cricket before his international selection?

The Wheel is Forever
Dhoni on Sreesanth's beamer:

"He is a tough guy, he plays good aggressive cricket. Even I don't know if it [the beamer] was deliberate or slipped out of his hands.
.....
He's the only guys who knows. But things like that should be avoided. If it was not intentional it was pretty accurate [smiles again]. So it's better to avoid all this."

Now I agree with what Dhoni said, but I don't agree with him saying it. Normally, you want to keep all the doubts like that in house.

Now the headlines will read "Dhoni questions accurate beamer".

I wonder whether that part about smiles was just made up by Siddhartha Vaidyanathan.. smiling part certainly would add to his story otherwise he hasn't covered what hasn't been already been said about the incident.

Seriously, is your opinion of Indian cricketers based upon real cricket or some simulated online game? Munaf was our best one-day bowler before he got injured. He has been horrible in the field but please get your facts right.

Apparently, he endured a cycle of injuries (just like he is right now) in domestic cricket and that led to reduced pace and a more conservative approach to bowling.
