The Wheel is Forever
Firstly, we don't know any of them personally, secondly you can't really judge a player form a few grunts in the field and getting abit angry when he doesn't get the breakthroughs. It would be silly to call someone a dick because of that. For me, I like sportsmen for their stories and what they've achieved, not their supposed personalities which have no idea about anyways.
Him being a dick or not is a completely separate issue from being a great cricketing story...you can be both, that's all I was saying. And I do think a lot of players act like dicks on the field (not saying Sidebottom is one of them, cause I don't think he is), and I think its fair to call them that even if they are the nicest blokes on the street.

No, we don't know them personally but we can still make a judgement based on what we see on the field, how they come across in interviews and their reputation. The only reason I don't like Sidebottom and think he comes across as a bit of a dick is because of the way he acts on the field, espcially after finding the edge or just missing it. It's not the full story of his personality, but it's enough to form an opinion.
I don't think so at all really and it's most certainly not enough to make an opinion on a person. I find it judgmental and superficial.

People form an opinion almost straight away, whether it's right or wrong is a different matter. I've seen enough of Sidebottom's performances on the field to realise that I don't particularly like what I see, even if he is a great bloke off the field.

Personally, I find Sidebottom amusing. The aggression just doesn't seem right coming from him, it looks somewhat comical.
Anyway, I heard this guy was a dick.

I never said you said he was a dick, my point is that we have no resources to judge these people who we have never met, only their stories and what they've achieved in the sport. Similar things baffle me about how people go on about Shane Watson and Brett Lee because of their celebrations or whatever, it's so vain and superficial.

I'm not saying you're not allowed to form an opinion, you're certainly entitled to one, I'm just saying that it's silly. I've had the same arguments with my mates about this and it does my head in. Makes no sense.

Why not? It's human instinct to watch something and then think a certain way, you can't really help it. People will form opinions on what they say, quite often they aren't privileged enough to know what the cricketers are like away from the game, so their performances on the field are usually the only things they can use to form an opinion.

50 for Ganguly, well played.

I know it's human instinct, but it's stupid and that doesn't make it right. As I said it's judgmental and superfcial and quite alot of the time, simply wrong. And yes, there is not enough information to make judgements about them, so don't. Don't judge them at all on stuff other than what they've done and achieved. Not for something as fickle as how they snarl when they don't get a wicket. That doesn't make you a dick, I'm afraid to say.

Of course it doesn't make them a dick, but it gives me the impression that they are. I am going to judge people on what I see, how else am I supposed to form an opinion on a particular player?
