Starting afresh then:

WIs:
Greenidge, Hunte, Headley, Richards*, Weekes, Sobers, Walcott+, Marshall, Holding, Ambrose, Gibbs

Aust:
Trumper, Morris, Bradman*, Chappell, Harvey, Miller, Gilchrist+, Warne, Lindwall, Lillee, McGrath

Well I'm picking from the squads offered, and there's only Hayden as a back-up opener. I'm not dropping either Trumper or Morris for Hayden against a team that has Marshall, Ambrose, Holding and maybe Garner.

Feel a bit bad for axing Punter actually, he did more than either opener. But I think Waugh is needed...
Graeme Wood could handle those Windies quicks..

I know Hayden failed in his 7 tests against quality bowlers at the start of his career, but I think its unfair to think he couldn't handle them at his peak. Who is to say Trumper can?

Interesting to see Lara missing out but fair enough. Let's get the action started in Brisbane, shall we?

I'm a Hayden defender, and agree exactly with what you're saying, but the fact is, I rate both Trumper and Morris above him in general anyway.

Yeah, I don't think I rate Lara quite as highly as some round these parts. I think he's a genius and probably the best batsman of his generation, but I'd have Viv well ahead of him and have no real concerns putting my hand up and saying I think Headley, Sobers and Weekes were probably better as well. Lara's in some pretty good company in not making the team, with Worrell, Walcott (as a batsman rather than keeper/batsman), Kanhai, Richardson, Lloyd, etc, all in the same boat...

Umm I'd prefer to select the WI XI if possible? If so,

Greenidge, Hunte, Richards*, Headley, Lara, Sobers, Dujon+, Marshall, Holding, Ambrose, Gibbs

Hmm yeah. How about the Aussies (Matt79, The Sean, archiemac, JBMAC, Prince EWS and anyone else) take charge of the Aussie squad and the non-Aussies (roseboy, slifer, Perm, myself and anyone else) take charge of the WI squad? Don't want those Aussies purposely selecting a crap WI team to boost their own chances, you know?

Not that I've had a great deal of involvement with this thread, but if I was to select a West Indies XI out of the squads given then it'd look like this.

Greenidge
Haynes
Richards (c)
Headley
Lara
Sobers
Walcott (wk)
Marshall
Holding
Ambrose
Gibbs

Walcott, while obviously not a specialist wicket keeper like Dujon, was more than capable with the gloves and certainly a better batsman. I went for Greenidge/Haynes at the top of the order, purely for the partnership between the two.

EDIT: In the end it was a tough choice between Weekes and Lara, with Lara just nudging ahead for the final spot.

He probably forgot Lara. Anyways, Days of Grace - Haynes or Hunte? Dujon or Walcott? Everything else seems set.

Yeah, two teams of selectors is a good idea, although I resent the implication that I had selected a crap WI team - that would be my team, out of the squad presented, if they were playing for my life.

Haha, I was joking.

I really don't think you need 5 bowlers, especially since Sobers could do a very good job as a fourth seamer or second spinner, depending on the makeup of the side.

My WI team:

Hunte
Greenidge
HEadley
IVAR*
Lara
Sobers
Walcott+
Marshall
Holding

Garner/Gibbs dependent on pitch for first test.
