I've gotta say, this is good commitment. I sorta gave up with my notts 2008 thread, well mainly 'Cause it took to long to screenshot then upload and type it all out, but i think i might start another one, or continue when i get motivated again.

28th August - National League: vs Durham (H)

Changes: A mass of them as fatigue is starting to take hold of the side. Lingham in for Lungley, and Dean comes in for Sherbourne. Nethercott replaces Casey, and Pearce moves to open as Marsden takes Jaques' place. And Sutton gives Goddard a rest.

Pearce did OK in his pinch-hitting role, making 30 odd. This was followed up by a great knock by Nethercott, with good support from Wilcox, who was unlucky to get out when attempting to up the run-rate. Still, the total was a little sub-par, with the position we were in at the 30th over.

In reply, Goodis was solid throughout, and with him at the crease - despite some streaky shots - Durham always looked comfortable.

30th August - County Championship: vs Kent (H)

The first day was ultra successful, mainly due to a great knock from Phil Jaques. He batted through the first day to be 163* at the end, and shared partnerships of worth with Pearson and Nethercott, whom both got 70s. A sour note was Clinton being forced to retire hurt, after receiving a fracture to the jaw from the first ball he faced. Goddard batted well the next day, and halfway through the session, the declaration came.

Kent's batting line-up had a bit of depth about it, however the effort by the bowlers was disciplined enough to break through. Sherbourne and Razzak both went for less than two an over throughout their spells, and claimed some wickets also. Jones cleaned up the tail, and allowed us to enforce the follow on.

In their second crack, Kent had starts throughout, but no-one went on to get a 100 that would have set us a more challenging total. Sherbourne bowled 38 overs for his 5 wickets, and all the other bowlers contributed throughout. This left us with only 97 to get, in two sessions.

While it was quite disappointing that we lost as many wickets as we did in the chase, while Jaques was there, the result was never in doubt.

4th September - National League: vs Kent (A)

As we enter the final few matches of the year, the main priority is the County Championship, and to gain promotion in the National League. Players are starting to tire though, and Clinton is out for two weeks with an injury.

Team for this match is as follows:

Jaques
Pearson*
Khalid
Nethercott
Wilcox
Pearce
Goddard+
Razzak
Lungley
Jones
Dean

Pearson and Jaques put on a century stand to start off with and at good pace. Despite a bit of a lull through the middle fifth of the innings, Nethercott finished the innings well to set up a total that should be defended.

The top order for Kent failed, and it was left to Denly who hit a rapid fire 50 to give them a chance. However, when he was run out, due to an errant call by Aitken, it was always going to be tough for Kent. Aitken attempted to make up for it, but to no avail. Jones hopefully starting to find some form with the ball.

5th September - National League: vs Surrey (A)

Changes: Marsden in for Jaques, and Wilcox shifts to opening. Sutton for Goddard, Bridge for Razzak, and Lingham for Lungley. All these changes are due to fatigue.

Despite the best efforts of Dean and especially Simon Jones, Surrey posted a healthy total on a pitch receptive of spin after winning the toss. Rule went at nearly run a ball over his innings of 90. Bridge was extremely disappointing, and didn't grasp the chance given to him today.

Wilcox was surprisingly slow out of his normal position, taking 77 balls for his 43, and when we lost both Pearson and Wilcox in quick succession, it left Khalid and Nethercott as two new batsmen finding their feet while the required rate sky rocketed. In the end, it was out of reach and despite Nethercott getting a quickfire 50, it was a disappointing day for the Derby boys.

7th September - County Championship: vs Surrey (A)

Changes: Dean in for Sherbourne, whom is still on international duty.

After a really good first session, where Jaques and Khalid both notched up half centuries, four wickets and slow scoring saw us reach tea on the first day at 5/230. A mini-fightback between Goddard and Marsden was shortly ended, and we ended up scrambling our way to above 320, thanks to Jones and Lungley.

The second day was an absolute nightmare, and it was only with 13 minutes left in it that Derby were able to secure a wicket. By this stage Surrey already led by 47 runs. Newman and Mullin had batted them into a position of much power. Eventually, they declared 181 ahead; dropped catches proved very costly.

Again, starts were a signature as we set about reeling in the deficit. Just as we looked in an OK position, drawing level for the loss of two wickets, we lost the set Khalid and Casey, leaving us vulnerable at what was virtually 4/10. At the end of the third day, the score was 7/303, leaving us only 122 in front.

After the early dismissal of Lungley, Jones and Marsden nearly saw the whole first session out. However, in the end, Marsden was out with five minutes remaining in the session to close the innings, setting Surrey 187 to win.

In the chase, Mullin ensured that the total would be safe, as the effect of a few early wickets was quashed by his quick scoring. It was a very disappointing game all round, which sees us drop to second, but only by one point.

13th September - National League: vs Warwickshire (A)

Changes: Jaques in for Marsden, Casey in for Clarke. Sherbourne returns for Dean, Goddard returns to take the gloves, Razzak and Lungley take their spots back.

It was a really good batting performance, as Pearson and Jaques once again combined for a big opening partnership. From there, a number of cameos appeared alongside Jaques as he posted his fifth century for the year in OD cricket.

A more than defendable total, and the bowling was pretty good for the most part, except for Lungley who got a fair bit of tap. At 9/183, we should have had the game won, however we just couldn't get that last wicket, and in the end Warks got over the line in a shattering loss for Derby.

21st September - County Championship: vs Middlesex (A)

Changes: Sherbourne back in for Dean. Clinton returns from injury for Marsden.

We lost the toss and were forced to bowl. From there, Strauss and Smith combined for a good opening partnership, but just before lunch we struck with three quick ones, including one with the last ball before the break. The next two sessions were frustrating, with the long Midds line-up proving hard to break through. However, after the removal of Nash and Morgan, Jones took a hat-trick to finish the innings, and keep them under 400.

We couldn't take a trick in response - nor could we hit a boundary until we were 3/50. A disciplined bowling effort thwarted our top order, and at tea on Day 2 we were 4/148. Four wickets in the next hour saw us looking down the barrel of the follow on, but Clinton's efforts with the tail saw us through to the next day, and made sure that we didn't have to bat again straight away.

Middlesex looked to be cruising at 1/123, but from there Razzak took over, and with assistance from Jones, saw a collapse leaving us with a reachable total for victory. However, the pitch wasn't getting any easier to bat on.

Chasing 332 to win, and with over an hour left on Day 3, everything was going swell until the last ball of the day, when Pearson edged a sweep to be caught at slip. This left us at 1/78, with 254 to win. The equation was simple as far as the coach was concerned - someone has to make a hundred.

Jaques unfortunately wasn't to be that man, making 64 before being trapped in front. Casey fell soonafter, but Khalid and Nethercott saw us to the break, from which we needed 180 to take the chocolates. After Khalid notched up his half century, the equation was down to only 130-odd, but he lost his wicket not long after that, leaving 6 wickets in hand. First innings hero Clinton fell for single figures, but Goddard strode to the crease with authority, and at Tea was already on 33*. With one hour and fifty minutes remaining, 74 were needed.

The Goddard show continued after the break, and by the time he was bowled on 68, out of a partnership of 104, there were only 19 runs needed for the win. Razzak and Nethercott, who played a very gritty knock, saw it through for the victory.

Despite Lancashire winning as well, our bonus points saw us one point ahead of them at the end of the season, giving us the County Championship!

Congratulations on a fine effort winning the County Championship. Did you end up gaining promotion in the National League?

25th September - National League: vs Scotland (H)

Changes: Pearce in for Khalid.

A disciplined bowling effort saw us restrict them to a somewhat disappointing total, the turning point being Lungley's dismissal of Coetzer. In the next over, Pearce took three wickets.

And despite the relatively early loss of Jaques, Pearson and Casey steered us home to victory. This in turn gave us promotion to Div 1 of the National League.

Recruiting Period

Derbyshire has been hit hard at the beginning of the 2003 season. Despite having one of his best seasons, Tom Lungley has retired. Kevin Dean, a stalwart of the club, has also decided that his time is up, whilst one day specialist Luke Sutton and back up spinner Graeme Bridge have also brought an end to their own careers.

The following players have been added to the squad:

Simon Katich: To provide some steel to the batting.
Scott Head: Poached from another team's youth system, being groomed as a top order batsman of the future.
Timothey Supple: Experienced opener, with an average just over 30 in both forms.
Robin Sked: Promising keeper from our own youth system.
Peter Brabin: Fast medium bowler from youth system, did pretty well in 2nd XI games last year.
Dennis Hopps: Raw fast medium bowler from youth system.
William White: Took 68 wickets last year, hopefully provide some support for our bowling attack.

Phil Jaques had to be let go, as he will be playing for Australia this summer.

Bring on 2013!

13th April - County Championship: vs Yorkshire (H)

Derbyshire Team
Pearson*
Clinton
Khalid
Casey
Nethercott
Katich
Goddard+
Razzak
Jones
Brabin
Sherbourne

Yorkshire batted well in their first innings, on a pitch that should prove to be tough to stay in on throughout the game. Stone batted very well, whilst the tail wagged a bit. What followed after their dismissal early on day 2 was abysmal, we ended up at lunch 6/80. Things obviously didn't end up much better after lunch, with the debutant top scoring in a brave effort.

Despite an aggressive intent, this didn't help us much further, as we ended up 3/47 at Tea on Day 2. From there, a mini-revival was headed by Simon Katich, and he got things up to 5/170, before losing his wicket in the last over before stumps in a tragic blow for Derbys. Goddard continued Kat man's good work, but after his dismissal, it all fell in and we finished only 28 ahead.

As displayed in the fourth innings, if he had've made another 120 in the first innings, then we would've been in with a show.
