Pakistan v NZ (4th ODI)

Poor old Dennis Meier has had a rough introduction to international cricket with three failures in three innings.
For the 4th ODI, he was replaced by Ross Taylor.
The other change was Lou Vincent coming in as an extra batsman in place of Bruce Martin. The pitch is expected to favour the pacemen today.
The Pakistani selectors have kept their faith in the same playing eleven for this crucial game.

Boy, was this pitch dynamite! :-O
The difference between the two sides today was a brave and determined innings from Yousuf who was all class under difficult conditions.
Batting last was a definite disadvantage today as the Pakistani pacemen were virtually unplayable at times.
Ross Taylor did us best to stay in the hunt, but got little support at the other end.

The ODI series now locked up at 2-2.

One change from the last match with Lou Vincent being replaced by Warren McSkimming.
The Pakistanis have stuck with the same 11 players yet again.

We lost the toss and got put into bat.
Things were going well midway through our allotted overs as we were over five per over with plenty of wickets in hand.
However the loss of three quick wickets meant we had to ease off the pedal and our total ended up short of the 250+ we were targeting.
The Pakistanis didn't find life much easier, but paced themselves well to get home with an over to spare.
Oram and McSkimming went for too many and that's what cost us in the end. :@

Pakistan take the ODI series 3-2, but of all the sides at last year's world cup, I found them the toughest, so still a creditable result for us.

NZ v Bangladesh 2008 (1st Test)

Some surprise amongst the fans at the omission of Mat Sinclair, but he's had plenty of chances since I took over the reigns and has failed to deliver the goods. He's also having a horrible season domestically.
Sinclair's spot went to Brendon McCullum, who will keep in place of captain Tim Weston.
We've gone in with an all pace attack with our destroyer, Shane Bond, being backed up by James Franklin, Mark Gillespie and Jacob Oram.

For the visiting Bangladeshis, their bowling attack seems to pose more of a threat than their batting linep.
Young spinner, Arafat Sunny, is making his debut.

Most of the day was spent trying to combat the tricky Bangladeshi spinners. 7 of the 8 wickets fell to the spinners and honours are roughly even after the first day's play.

Tragedy on the second morning of the test!

Shane Bond has been smashed on the shoulder while batting and is out of the test series! :-O

Things are going to be interesting now.
In the current test, we're down to a bowling attack of Gillespie, Franklin and Oram backed up by McMillan and Ryder.

Ouch, big loss there! :(

Decent start to the test against Bangladesh and a commendable effort against Pakistan. ;)

As I've already documented, our innings came to a disastrous end when Shane Bond had a delivery smash into his shoulder to put him out of the test series! :-O

A depleted NZ bowling attack soldiered on well throughout the day to give us the upper hand going into Day Three.

The Bangladeshi tail wagged mightily on the third morning to garner a small, but handy first innings lead.
Peter Fulton played a dogged innings to hold our batting together, and going into the final over of the day, the match was evenly poised.
However, Fulton fell to the penultimate ball of the day's play and the Bangladeshis have a decided edge going into Day Four! :@
With our lead at just 158, we'll be looking to add at least another 100 runs to give our weakened bowling attack any chance of bowling the visitors out in the fourth innings.

Jacob Oram was our saviour on Day Four with a magnificent innings of 155.
When Lou Vincent fell during the morning session, we were struggling at 201/6, but cometh the hour, cometh the man.
Oram found a good ally in Brendon McCullum, and they added 160 runs before McCullum departed for 66.
Franklin never looked comfortable, but stuck around while a further 31 were added.
Mark Gillespie is quite useful to have as last man in, and he allowed big Jake to dominate in what could turn out to be a vital last wicket stand of 64! :)

So we set the visitors a big target of 430 in their last innings for victory.
Franklin ripped out M.Hossain for a duck, but Nafees and Saleh took their side through to stumps without further loss at 125/1.

An interesting final day in prospect! Come on the Kiwis! :band:

Win to Bangladesh by 1 wicket

Rajin Saleh is the toast of Bangladeshi cricket fans all over the world after his superb double century guided his team to an improbable record setting victory in the 1st Test.

The weakened NZ bowling attack kept chipping away on Day Five to have the visitors at 302/6, but Saleh always looked the dangerman.
Debutante spinner Arafat Sunny is no mug with the bat, and it was his century seventh wicket partnership with Saleh that took the game away from NZ.
Once the Saleh-Sunny partnership was broken with Saleh's dismissal, three quick wickets fell to see Bangladesh at 421/9, still nine runs short of victory.
However, Franklin and Gillespie were now completely spent and it was left to Oram and Ryder to try and claim the last wicket needed.
But it was not to be. To the delight of their team mates, the last wicket pair of Rahman and Haque accumulated those runs to spark off wild scenes of celebration.

Bangladesh 1-0 up in the test series. :-O

We've brought Bruce Martin into the playing eleven to replace the injured Shane Bond as the pitch is expected to take turn fairly early (danger signs for us there with the Bangladeshi trio of spinners!)
The Bangladesh side is unchanged.

We won the toss and elected to bat despite the overcast conditions and very slow outfield.

Fulton and Taylor got us off to a solid start, but after Fulton's dismissal, we slumped from from 85/1 to 121/3 with Ryder and McMillan continuing their run of scratchy form.

Weston was next out at 179/4, whereupon Taylor and Vincent came together in an unbeaten stand of 88 to take us through to stumps at 267/4.

40 minutes play was lost to rain during the morning session.

New Zealand - 559/9 declared

R.Taylor - 237
L.Vincent - 130

Bangladesh - 17/0

A record 287 run partnership for the fifth wicket between Taylor and Vincent laid the foundation for a big total for us.
Taylor has slotted comfortably into the opening berth vacated by Stephen Fleming, while Vincent scored his third test century since I took over the team.

We declared late in the day to give Franklin and Gillespie a crack at the Bangladeshi openers, but they managed to get through to stumps okay.
