W.G. never wore a box...

If some fool dared come out to bat without at least a thigh pad (and I'd recommend full body armour anyway) then I'd make sure that got 'permanently injured'. Any fast bowler worth their salt would zero in on the unprotected area and cause a bit of pain. Anyone remember that UAE batsman who came out without a helmet and the bowler (was it Donald?) zeroed in on his head straight away and sconed him?

Same principle.
yeh it was AD, the batsman was Sultan Zarwani..

To be honest, if the bowler tried honing in on my thighs, I'd clip him to leg for singles every ball, unless he was very good, or incredibly quick, in which case, i'd probably pop a thigh guard on

To the poster above: sure you won't die if you get hit in the head, but you wouldn't mind losing a couple of teeth?
I don't agree with that. If you get smacked on the temple, trying to avoid the ball - you are toast... maybe not in the lower grades of club cricket, but if the bowler is flinging them down at 120kmph plus and you get smacked on the temple - curtains for you.

Also, ask Mark Vermeulen how he fared after getting hit on the head twice... and he was wearing a helmet as I recall.

Not really, at the level most club cricketers play at there's no need for one tbh, i wouldn't even wear a helmet if it wasn't for the ECB because batting with a cap one would reduce the slight risk of me getting hit in the head in the first place and even if it did hit be in the face i wouldn't die.
You won't die if the ball hits you in the crotch either. Up for that?
Jees, you two's current avatars are confusing!

Exactly.

Like it or not, mostly sans-helmet at a remotely decent level of cricket your life's in danger. Some don't care, though.

I've seen a kid hit on the head by a Beamer in 1995 (several years before helmets at kid's level became remotely common) and it was a hospital job and he was said to be damn lucky to live.

I couldn't imagine not wearing a helmet, I have just got so used to it. I have a pretty good ligh-weight one, so it isn't too much of a problem, plus it's never too hot round here.

Spot the generation gap.

Would imagine only a tiny proportion of those a year or so younger than me will even know what "no helmet" means.

My first full season was the last before helmets were made compulsary.

I don't wear them in the nets when facing spin and medium pace, but apart from that, I'll always wear one.

For someone bowling meduim pace (50-55mph) I'd still probably still wear one. Better to be safe than sorry imo.

I've batted without a helmet in a game and the nets. Once in the nets, some guy bowled the perfect bouncer, zeroed in on my head, i played the hook shot of my life to solve that.

The thigh pad issue, i've been hit a few times by the subcontinental bowlers at Uni who bowl HDS-esque (fast as they can, don't give a **** about line or length). Sure it hurts a bit, but you just carry on.

Worst injury i've had in a game (and the only instance i've had to use a runner) was because i had a dodgy ankle at the time and playing a run down to third man shot tweaked it instead of the 45 overs i'd spent in the field previous.

WTF is the matter with mods these days?. I pulled you up for your spelling....and now this!!!!. Seriously, there's gotta be some kind of test beforehand to know the difference between "with" and "without".

Never worn a helmet. Been hit on the head once which was only glancing. As long as you don't take your eye off the ball you'll be right alright although I encourage people to wear them from an early age. I have just never bothered

Most people of your generation are the same, TBH.

Exceptionally rare at our club (and the general leagues) to see anyone over the age of 27 or so wear a helmet.

Yeah, the grade I play these days doesn't warrant wearing one really. I like to think I pull and hook quite well so they soon stop dropping it short anyway.
