**** me that was disgraceful, one reason wicket keepers shouldn't be playing as specialist batsmen.

Perhaps it's just another example of Moores' south coast bias? Dunno why he didn't go the whole hog and pick Jason Lewry. Might as well ditch Panesar for Yardy while he's at it.
Can see that happening, itbt. Won't, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Shocking drop there, btw. Bit late on commenting on it because my mum made me do a google search on glandular fever.

Getting a century actually does make you immune from most criticisim. I thinkhe has a problem when the field gets a bit defensive later in his innings as his scoring rate often drops - why I believe he shouldn't be in the ODI team btw. But as test match batsmen he more than makes up for that failing with the rest of his game. It seems to me like you espect Bradman esque performances from the English batsmen except Collingwood it seems who escapes such harsh criticism.

No I just don't expect the batsmen to constantly give their wickets away. Of recent times it feels like if you bowled underarm at England's batsmen they'd manage to hand you the opportunity for a wicket every 15 overs.

Forgot about KP, but Key and Tresco were 3 and 4 years ago, which is a long time in cricket these days.

Not criticising someone because they score a hundred is typical of the English attitude, whereas Australians wouldn't think twice about it if the dismissal was poor. That sort of thing is why Australians get the best out of themselves in sport and why Englishmen often don't.
I wasn't sure how long ago Trescothick and Key's respective double centuries were. I must say I agree with you regarding the criticism that a batsmen gets for a poor dismissal, runs on the board are obvoiusly runs on the board, but the dismissal does have to come into question, whether the batsmen is sitting on 0 or 100.

First Test: England Vs India at Lords – Lunch

Michael Vaughan tosses the coin a good ten feet in the air and Rahul Dravid called tails. The coin lands on heads, England have won the toss and Vaughan chooses to have a bat first. The England bowlers warming up have a huge grin on their faces and the Indian’s a more inverted grin. The pitch report reveals a tinge of moisture in what is a batsman’s paradise, the groundsman going as far as saying it is the best pitch he has ever prepared.

Some slow, wayward, leg side bowling from Sreesanth and Zaheer Khan wasted the new ball as England raced to 40 off just 5 overs. However, showing maturity way beyond his years, RP Singh settled into a rhythm bowling a good length outside off stump and stemmed the flow of runs somewhat, conceding just 12 off his five over spell. At drinks, England had steadily and safely reached 76/0. After an Indian team huddle, Saurav Ganguly, the ex India captain was thrown the ball to have a go with his 70mph floaters. The results was instant and miraculous, his second ball beat Cook’s outside edge and the forth struck him on the pad trapping him LBW for 36. With Ganguly, Khan and later Sreesanth starting to find their lines and lengths, Rahul Dravid decided to bring on Kumble in an attempt to bring a further breakthrough into the solid England batting line up.

Kumble, after starting with a high full toss settled in nicely with his miserly line and length and flat trajectory. Meanwhile, Dinesh Karthik dropped a sitter at backward point of Sreesanth as Strauss added more to his streaky innings and Vaughan edged one off Kumble through third man for four. India increased the strangle hold looking for the vital second wicket but to no avail as England ended the first session of the First Test at 115/1

Not the worst first session for India in the end imo, especially after the early carnage.

I think I'll have to agree with SP here.

(I haven't read much of the argument, but read enough).

There is sufficient reason to criticize Cook. Before I state why, I must say that after the Pakistan series, I said to all my friends that he will be one of England's best openers ever (and this is coming from an Australian).

I stated long ago on this site that his top score of 120 odd is somewhat concerning to me and SP has mentioned why too - concentration. If you look at all the top batsmen, past and present, I'm quite sure that they would of (most often than not) of scored 150+ after their first 6 tons.

One of you guys mentioned that it is unfair to criticize a batsmen who has scored a100. In some senses it is, but you must remember, this is probably the difference of who is good and who is great.

Is it right to conclude that the Indian bowlers haven't been lucky, but that they didn't really enforce their own luck. So far, this hasn't been the bowling needed to win a test, right?

After the first 5 overs or so it looked like it could be much worse, they pulled it back pretty well imo, despite the dropped catch. Not that bad, although I know you'll never concede that.
Things improved, but not enough to claim they pulled it back pretty well.
And there is something odd in saying that things went pretty well, despite a dropped catch. In the end, catches are too often the decisive factor in tight tests!

Whatever it takes!!!
nooooooo... not u, DK... Get the feeling that my avatar challenge is gonna turn out to be a horribly wrong idea...... :(

Gut feeling is DK will get a string of low scores and field worse than this. :(

yeah, I know, for some reason I am being real cynical today, dunno why...
