W.G. never wore a box...

A thigh pad? It's just annoying and gets in the way. I don't own one myself, and most kit ones don't fit too well so they're always slipping.
Ah, thought you were talking about the thread title. I must read more carefully before posting

Haha yeah, thought you might have been. I've copped a few there in the nets while wearing one, and it hurts enough then. Don't want to try it without one.

I never wore a thigh pad up until 2 seasons ago when I got hit 11 times in one match, 4 in one over

Yeh, I'm not a batsman.
I wear a thigh pad when I get the chance to be wheeled out to bat these days. Never seem to get hit on the front thigh, though the number of times I've been hit on the inner thigh is getting ridiculous now... Probably have some serious deep tissue damage there now...

Might head down a few grades and unleash HeathDavisSpeed on some unsuspecting teenagers who've never heard of Heath... Could be carnage.

Used to always wear a thigh pad but never got hit...the other day, I decided it wasn't of any use so took it off and was hit four times in the same place on the thigh.

I can see why you wouldn't, as Andy said, it's annoying and gets in the way. Find the same with a helmet tbh, I usually just wear one for the first few balls to get my eye in then get rid of it unless facing someone really quick.

Not as a person (I don't know him) but because he doesn't wear a thigh pad he's pretty silly tbh.
Not really, at the level most club cricketers play at there's no need for one tbh, i wouldn't even wear a helmet if it wasn't for the ECB because batting with a cap one would reduce the slight risk of me getting hit in the head in the first place and even if it did hit be in the face i wouldn't die.

I wear OBO strippers, best thing ever tbh, it doesn't feel like wearing any thigh pad at all, yet it gives better protection than anything else.

TBH you'd be more at risk from a beamer than a bouncer. Certainly back in the Under 13s that was the case.

I'll probably always wear a helmet, unless it's hot and there are spinners on at both ends (even then maybe not, given I play the sweep so often), simply because it would feel strange batting without one now.

You won't die if the ball hits you in the crotch either. Up for that?

Yeah thigh pads are just annoying.. If you get hit there, it's not going to do any damage is it?
Could range from a minor bruise/swelling to not being able to walk properly for a week (happened to me). Not sure if you can get permanently injured.

If some fool dared come out to bat without at least a thigh pad (and I'd recommend full body armour anyway) then I'd make sure that got 'permanently injured'. Any fast bowler worth their salt would zero in on the unprotected area and cause a bit of pain. Anyone remember that UAE batsman who came out without a helmet and the bowler (was it Donald?) zeroed in on his head straight away and sconed him?

Same principle.

How many pads or protection is it possible, and legal, to wear as a batsman anyway?

To the poster above: sure you won't die if you get hit in the head, but you wouldn't mind losing a couple of teeth? I have nightmares about getting a top-edge from a sweep shot and having it knock out a few teeth.
