Greig is a good commentator with presumably a good knowledge & understanding of the game but listening to his reasoning behind selecting this team is atrotious. Ha its so funny its useless tearing your hair out & argue over it.

Wow really, people are going crazy here. No one is saying that I have a greater knowledge of how the game of cricket is played than Greig, or that I know more. I simply stated that the omission of Hobbs from an all time English team, coming from a guy like Greig, is inexcusable.

It is inexcusable because he has played at a higher level than any of us and has more knowledge of how the game is actually played than any of us.

It's just like it is perfectly acceptable for me to mouth off on Dhoni because he played an idiotic shot, but that doesn't really mean 'I could play better than him.' You have to compare him to other journalists/commentators (as he is one of them now), and compared to them, writing for the most respected site and magazine on cricket, his omissions (both in Indian and English teams) are inexcusable.

That's all. No one is claiming that they personally have superior knowledge than Greig. No one. And definitely no one is saying that they have more practical knowledge of the game than him.

If he is going to write about history of the game, then critisisms, especially when its warranted like it is now, is all part of the game and it doesn't mean anyone is trying to prove themselves superior.

In any case, If I want to learn about the proper way to play a cover drive off real fast bowling, I'll listen to Greig before anyone else on the forum, but if I want to learn more about the history of the game, I'll listen to about 10 guys (archie, SJS, etc) on this forum before Greig tbh. And that's not a swipe at Greig either.

Does anyone know if he also picked his All Time West Indies XI prior to that Eng-WI series? That would have been interesting to see.

Fidel Edwards in the reckoning for the last bowler spot?

It would be like a SAT question, find one that doesn't belong with the others: Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner, Fidel Edwards, Curtly Ambrose, Michael Holding.

Tony Greig: Michael Holding?

Is that a mix-and-match of the semi-decent (Cork, S Jones, Butcher, Ramprakash) and the joke? Like Loye opening in the longer game?

As for Alec Stewart facing the first ball... he WOULD kill you, you know that?
Can i just point out here that Mal Loye has better FC stats than Mark Butcher does?

Butcher, however, has missed loads of FC cricket so hasn't had the chance to really cash-in during his best years.

Loye and Butcher both started fairly averagely, and have gotten better. If Butcher, like Loye, had never played so much as a Test, I reckon his FC average might well be pushing towards the 50 mark.

Well, Holding was indeed the only one he faced.

I'm not saying he'd average 50, that takes quite something. I reckon he'd more likely average 47-8. What does he average currently, 42? It's certainly not inconceivable.

Including tests, but i would estimate he would be around the 43/4 mark excluding test

Acctualy im going to work oput exactly what his domestic fc record is

EDIT: He averages 43.186 escluding tests

That's more like what I expected. And I generally prefer domestic-First-Class-only to Test-and-domestic FC stats.
