Cricket's most over rated players

I think the award should be renamed to the "Good player having a poor season" award, myself.
Yeah. Much better ring to it. Would make Jamie happier, too. Reckon we can change the title of this thread to "Good cricketers having (relatively ...or not, as the case may be) poor careers"?

Off the top of my head, if we're comparing reputation to performance ...

Brett Lee
Danish Kaneria
Alastair Cook
Graeme Smith
Hershelle Gibbs
Ramnaresh Sarwan
Chris Gayle

A year ago, I'd have included guys like Harmison & Laxman, but I don't think anyone over-rates them nowadays.
:-O
Chris Gayle - Can play classy shots but I don't think he is as good a player as people make him out to be.

Watson a tad over-rated imo, but I think it stems from the hope (more than expectation) that he might kick on and be a solid test/ ODI all rounder.

Gonna cop some heat for this, but I seriously think Ian Bell is hugely overrated. He looks technically compact, but I just don't see him kicking on and becoming as good a player as many rate him. Unfortunately, from what I've seen of him, he just seems to find ways to get out when either things are tough or just when he's starting to blossom. For England's sake, I hope that he gets over that part of his game. I know he's scored some good runs from time to time, and I accept that my view of him is based largely on his efforts against Australia.

That comical run-out in the ODI at Brisbane this year when Clarke had his back to the stumps and back-handed them down with Bell mid-pitch, for me, sums up his career. He seems to find ways to get out.

England - Panesar, massively over rated due to the fact he wears a turban and is better than Giles

Australia - Cameron White, comparisons with Shane Warne do him no favour

Pakistan - Kaneria, because's he their only leg spinner and can produce some great balls but it generaly inconsistent

India - Khartik, doesn't look up to that much imo

NZ - McCullum, people seem to bracket him with Gilchrist as being an attacking keeper when his averages are quite low

SL - Tharanga, defintely not the next Jayasuria

Who has also taken over 200 ODI wickets at less than five runs an over. Afridi maybe overrated in regard to his batting but his all-round cricketing abilities are woefully underrated, Pakistan’s best all-rounder by miles.
People don't worship him because of his bowling, it's all about the fact he can hit the ball hard and far.

Oh no! He has proved time and again how valuable he is to the newzealand side. He not only bowls but he bats lower the order. He is a valuable asset to the team.

Never agree on this.. He has been performing...WC 2007 is such an example. He might not be a great attacking bowler but he is a bowler who knows his limitations very well. His variation of pace is awesome sight! Love him watching bowling than any other spinner IMO...for me
Minnow basher TBH.

Could do that 50 times if you wanted. Really gets boring, especially as some of the players who were being mentioned as overrated 3 years ago are STILL being mentioned now!
Yeah, eventually these threads spawn a good discussion though, well I'm hoping this one will do the same.

It was Cam White if memory serves.

He is an attacking batsman, anybody can see that and if you've ever watched one of his innings then you would know that. People compare him to Gilchrist in that respect, which is fair enough, as are the Dhoni-Gilchrist comparisons. I've never heard a single person seriously say that McCullum is as good as Gilchrist, which would be madness.

If they do I must've missed them, because most overrated threads I read (probably about 1 in 5) tend to end-up with
X is overrated
yes, he is
X is overrated
no he's not!
yes he is because...
ah, but only blue monkeys on a Tuesday rate him as B, most people rate him as F...
which, to me, is fairly boring.

I know who I rate, and I know who a fair few people overrate and underrate. I don't really need discussion on whether V is slightly more overrated than O, which often ends-up being done too.

Meh, I always like to discuss a player, whether I think he is overrated or underrated is almost irrelevant because I always find it interesting to hear other people's point of view and their opinion.

I like to discuss a player, yes, even 2 or 3, but threads like this always seem to me to end-up with 50 different people trying to be debated as to who's more minutely overrated than the other.

Recurring topics such as this, Warne-vs-Murali, Lara-vs-Tendulkar, etc. are just, well, something long-term members like myself see and almost instinctively think "uh... this AGAIN".

For more medium-term (and obviously short-term) members such as yourself it's obviously a slightly different story

Agreed, got over these thread after one year of seeing them every month. Worst threads ever, so boring.
