I hate the Williams sisters for the exact reason Mitchell said, but I also hate Sharapova and Ivanovic for those reasons. It's just slow ugly tennis and is really boring.
The Williams sisters hit the ball hard there is no denying that BUT they are also bringing a lot more 'touch' in their game. Not as much as say Henin but it is still in their game.

As for Henin, you have to admit Jono she's done well for someone who's 5'6.
Yeah, which makes it all the more tragic she isn't a mentally tough player. She'd be close to all-time great status then.

At the moment she's a very very good player, apparently ranked #1, and without a Wimbledon title.

Compared to the majority of the womens top 20 i'd say Henin is small.
Yes, I'm bored!

It's tough to be considered an all time great womens player with the number of Grand Slams that Margaret Smith Court, Graff, Helen Wills Moody, Evert, Navratilova, Billie Jean King and Suzanne Lenglen won.

The Williams sisters won't approach their level. Hell, Venus has the same number of Grand Slams as Henin. Why is Wimbledon the tie breaker?

there is a sense of prestige in people's(and in a lot of players') mind regarding the tournament, that it's the most coveted title in tennis...that's about it...there is no real reason why it should be a tie-breaker or anything else....

INDIA AND PAKISTAN DOUBLE UP FOR CAMPBELL'S CHAMPIONSHIPS
Doubles Team of Amritraj & Qureshi Receive Wild Card

Posted July 8, 2007

NEWPORT, RI – The International Tennis Hall of Fame has announced that Prakash Amritraj of India and Aisam-Ui-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan have been given a wild card into the doubles tournament of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.
This will be Amritraj and Qureshi’s second appearance together as a doubles team. They first teamed together in Great Britain back in March for a futures tournament winning in the first round.

Prakash Amritraj is the son of former tennis professional Vijay Amritraj, a three-time winner of the Hall of Fame Championships, and will be making his second appearance in Newport. In 2003 Prakash received a wild card into the Newport singles tournament (first round loss to eventual champion Robby Ginepri) and teamed with ATP Pro Rajeev Ram in the doubles tournament. Earlier this year at the Challenger event held in Fergana, Uzbekistan, Prakash and his cousin Stephen Amritraj reached the semifinals. Prakash is currently playing in the singles qualifying tournament of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships and has made it through the second round of play. His next match will be against Scott Lipsky of the United States.

Aisam-Ui-Haq Qureshi turned pro in 1998 and will be making his first appearance in Newport. He is the No. 1 ranked singles and doubles player in Pakistan, and already this year he has won seven doubles titles in Futures events with five different partners. Qureshi also won singles titles in Kuwait and in United Arab Emirates (UAE) Futures events. In 2002 Qureshi shared the ATP’s Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award with Amir Hadad of Israel.

Qureshi is also trying to qualify for the singles main draw tournament of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships and has made it through the second round of play. Qureshi will play is final qualifying match against American Brendan Evans on Bill Talbert Center Court, starting at 11:00am.

Also the fact that the grass court season is so short, and there are hardly any grass court tournaments at all. It adds to the prestige of winning the only Grand Slam on grass, considering there is hardly another chance to win a grass title.

sure, and it's my favourite tourney as well but that's no legit reason to rate it above another grand slam tournament...each slam has its own quirks and vagaries and uniqueness and its own level of toughness...

I know Wimbledon is the title every player wants to win, but I don't think Venus' success at Wimbledon is any greater than Henin at the French Open.

At this point, I'd rate Serena above both of them, but she's in a slightly lower tier of woman players for me. About the same level as Monica Seles. (Although you could argue that Seles would've won more titles if not for the stabbing.)

right you are, she was beating graf at all three slams except wimbledon when that happened...if she had kept that up for the next few years(and she was certainly looking good for that), graf's number of singles slams would've come down quite a bit and hers would have gone up significantly...not 1/3rd the same player after she came back from the stabbing incident, it really affected her physically and psychologically...

It was good to see both Amritraj and Aisam making it to the quarters. It was a long time since we had a player from the subcontinent making it to the Quarters of an ATP event.

Bump!

Hewitt took Federer to three sets in Cincinnati today - Feds also gave up a set to Almagro, of all people. What with losing to Đoković last week, are there signs of an era ending?

Young gun Querrey made the quarters, was a set up v James Blake, somehow squandered it. Disappointing. Expect Davydenko to smash Blake to smithereens tho.

And IMO Murray should just break off his season and get his injury sorted. OK, he'll lose a flipping lot of rating points, but on the bright side if he draws a seed in the early rounds of an early-season Grand Slam or a Masters tournament, he'll race up the rankings again.
