Wonder where your from ? 4 Englishmen in the team when England are rubbish at oneday cricket. Admittedly Flintoff's a dead cert and Pietersen a possibility, but the other two are a joke
Pietersen a possibility? He is the fastest man to 1000 runs in ODI cricket!!! Pietersen is a certainty if ever there was one.

Astle>Sehwag and Gayle
Sehwag sure, but Gayle?

Astle's had a good 2006 so far, but Gayle has been significantly better otherwise for some time now. He's also a more useful bowler than Astle, and has a better scoring rate with the bat, both by noticable margins.

In the last five years...

Astle - 2229 runs @ 35.95, 12 fifties, 5 hundreds.
Gayle - 3414 runs @ 41.63, 17 fifties, 10 hundreds.

Pietersen is like Brett Lee. Much much better in ODI's than tests. (Well lately Lee's been better in tests but you know what I mean.) Pietersen reads ODI situations well and doesn't feel pressure. He's not afraid of big shots and most of the time he's England top scorer in ODI's. I'd be willing to bet that in England last few series he's been their highest scorers in close to half those games.

He won the ICC award for best ODI player last year ever. Although I don't put much stock into those awards... especially if the word "Wisden" is put in front of the award. But Pietersen is a no brainer in ODI's.

Harmison in the team isn't a joke. I wouldn't pick him, but in the Natwest series last year he was amazing against Australia and most importantly, Ricky Ponting. I'd pick (for pacers) Pollock, Akhtar, Flintoff, Ntini above him with others competing with him. But he is a fine ODI bowler.

Strauss in the team is a joke though. Nice innings the other day... but he's not close.

oh well my apologies sanz, but again i agree with your initial side
well actually no, had a rethink, this is who i would chose now:

SR Tendulkar
HH Gibbs
KC Sangakkara+
KP Pietersen
Inzaman-ul-Haq * - Captain
A Flintoff
SM Pollock
Shaid Afridi
DS Vettori/M Ntini - dependig on conditions
SE Bond
M Muralitharan

Tendulkar - even though, his ODI since the 2003 WC has still been good and he franlkly the best ODI opener even, so you got to have him.
Gibbs - very destructive, Australia will remember his 175 very well
Sangakkara - 2nd best Keeper/bat in the world obvious selection
KP - fastest to 1000 ODI runs, another must
Inzi - his ODI form since VB series 2004 has been superb, not a clear cut choice by any means, but i personally would pick him
Freddie - for obvious reasons
Pollock - very economical bowler and his batting in ODI's at least is very capable of being in the top 7.
Afridi - on his day no one can be more destructive than him, has reinvented himself and has been a lot more consistent since 2004, for me cant think of a side playing the aussies without him.
Vettori/Ntini - top class ODI bowler, very economical and is a very capable lower order batsman plus a very record vs Australia. Ntini could swap with as conditions suite, since the side already has the great Muttiah.
Bond - fantastic ODI bowler, super SR and great record vs Australia. A must IMO
Muralitharan - the best offie in ODI history, no arguments

Unlucky to miss out: Dravid, Akhtar, Dhoni and Yuvraj mainly..

Perfect, don`t change a thing. Ever. In fact, everyone`s ODI team must be exactly like that. Forever!

Eyes not spreadsheets
Not sure what you're basing it if it's not on current form.

If it's over career some of those would be very borderline picks...

Lara is borderline, could have a few people in front of him. I'd have Lee over Bracken as well, as good as Bracken has been.

Good side though, not far off mine.

Cricketer Of The Year
World XI as at this moment in time

I thought this would be fun trying to select a World XI today , based on Cricketers Currently active (post retirements etc.)

My Test World XI would be -

Mathew Hayden
Stephen Fleming
Ricky Ponting
Kumar Sangakkara
Mohammed Yousuf
Rahul Dravid
Michael Clarke
Brett Lee
Shane Bond
Makhaya Ntini
Muralitharan

Any thoughts ....

Your selections....

I hate the bloke, but KP has got to be in there. Push Dravid as opener rather then Fleming, who should never be there anyway. Oh or just get rid of Clarke.

International 12th Man
For Test cricket:

Hayden
Cook
Ponting
Dravid
Pietersen
Sangakkara
Hussey
Clark
Bond
Muralitharan
Asif

Got 10 players fairly quickly then struggled to think of someone to fill the number 7 spot and plumped for Hussey in the end. There are plenty of batsmen around who I could have picked but I ideally wanted someone who could contribute with the ball. Really, when you look at world cricket Flintoff is the only genuine Test all-rounder (and despite his poor form I very nearly picked him anyway) and that is quite sad.

ODIs as well quickly:

Hayden
Jayasuriya
Ponting
Pietersen
Clarke
Symonds
Gilchrist
Pollock
Malinga
Bond
Muralitharan
