Where he's coming from is irrelevant to the fact that it's not a test competition. If he's to be a cricket fan, he must learn and respect the traditions and classifications in terminology - especially if he's going to post about cricket on forums.

He wasn't criticised - he was simply corrected. If one is wrong and not corrected, one is likely to continue being wrong. Hopefully he won't make the same mistake in future now that it has been cleared up.

You're technically correct, of course, but "No." wasn't really the most helpful of corrections, was it? You might have at least made some effort to explain why he was wrong. You did after he replied, but if he hadn't....? I'd like to think we're quite a broad church on CW, with room for the tragics clutching their well-thumbing copies of Wisden & newbie cricket fans too.

It might not have been your intention, but it read as a bit pissy & condescending to me. I wouldn't want any newcomers to think we're all a bunch of elitist tools.

TBH, I thought it was entirely appropriate. There's being a newcomer and there's not knowing some of the most basic game-traits. I knew what a Test was when I was 7.

Yes but you've had cricket widely available to you since you were seven, assuming you've lived in England since you were seven. The lad in question only discovered his love for the sport since the world cup.

Exactly.

He's aware of the difference between a test game and ODI ect.
It's just the format of the competition he was talking about was similar to Test cricket.

I'm gonna stop speaking on his behalf now.
