Meh, I think Richard is wrong.

That innings to balls and talent and it just shows that I was right when I said he should have been in the WC squad.

Now, as for when Vaughan and Freddie get back. I think Shah and Plunket should be dropped, because dropping Bell or Collingwood is just plain stupid.

Bell continually impresses me. Top knock.

I thought that at times the Windies bowled pretty well but the lack of wickets meant they lost focus. Hopefully England will declare overnight and Harmison can actually pitch it on the wicket this time around.
I think he's right about Prior. When he came in to bat the WI bowlers weren't bowling as well as they were earlier in the day and were tired or very near to it. Perfect situation to come in for him. Give him a couple more innings before singing his praises. Not the same but when Mahmood bowled in his first Test and was bowling with pace and fire I thought he'd be doing better than he is now. He's not out of contention, but one swallow doesn't make a summer.

Ridiculous. Firstly, there it's highly unlikely to have been sarcastic given your opinion of Prior and secondly, even if it was, you have no right to edit such a post after the fact, IMO. Disgraceful act - dire.
Agreed that Richard's wrong there.

Anyway, regarding Prior, I think some people are over-reacting a tad, but I also think some are failing to credit him at all for fear of him being another Jones. The innings itself doesn't quite prove as much as some are making out, however the fact that it was similar to that of another player who turned out to be a failure isn't exactly a reason to play it down. I'm quite sure, as much as it was a good time for Prior to come in, that Richard, Grecian and the like did not expect him to score a century. He did anyway and though (and in fine style, I must add), so I'll not sit her and read about how it means nothing because he was expected to do so or, even more ridiculously, because Jones scored a hundred in similar circmstances early in his career. Firstly, one must realise that Jones has greatly underachieved with the bat rather than just being rubbish and secondly, one must realise that Prior is a much more accomplished batsman at first class level anyway - as well as appearing to have better footwork and shot selection among other things. The similarities between the innings are no real reason to play it down, IMO, and as much as it wasn't a particularly tough time to come in, he did all expected of him and thensome.

Myself, well, I've been quietly confident about Prior's batting for a little while and have actually called for his selection a few times (or, at very least, inquired about his keeping and brough him up a few times). His first class record, while nothing that screams "test class specialist batsman" is more than good enough to suggest he'll be a good #7 batsman. And even though he failed by-and-large, and even though it was an ODI series, Prior's stint opening in Pakistan actually impressed me. While he clearly wasn't ODI standard as a specialist batsman at the time, he didn't look that far off it - he looked like a batsman while out there, just not quite the finished article. I'm sure the selectors have held a similar opinion of his batting as well given how he was selected in that series, and also his first class record - it's his keeping that is the concern and even if he goes on to score 250* tomorrow, that concern will remain. I don't think I've seen him keep, and if I did I can't remember it, but as a reluctant wicket keeper, and as the selectors haven't chosen him despite good first class batting displays, I'd take a guess to say it's not of the greatest quality.

Since I have been at school can somebody fill me in as to whether this England total is the result of a belter; great batting; or terrible bowling?

Terrible bowling for the most part. Cook batted quite well given the conditions at the time and the chancelessness of his innings, but there was nothing particularly special about the Bell, Collingwood or Prior knocks really. The pitch is quite batsman-friendly, however the overhead conditions have made up for that - we've seen swing throughout when the bowlers have got it right.

Lol, the one night I miss the cricket, a debutant English wicketkeeper scores a century. Good stuff though, the bowling might be rubbish but you still have to go out there and score the runs, well done to Collingwood and Bell as well.

Personally I'd be very inclined to not pick Flintoff or Vaughan for the next Test. I agree with Boycott about how Vaughan should be playing some County Cricket and getting back to form there before he comes back into the Test side.

I seem to remember one of the things England did a lot under Fletcher was that if a player got injured he'd have to play in a county game or whatever before they'd be considered.
I am starting to think the same about Vaughan!!

Haha, WTF? So it takes 73 mins to realise something you've posted can be misconstrued... and you must be pilloried? Baffles logic, that stance.

And I don't see how that linked post has any significance, TBH.
Don't keep defending the indefensible. It makes you look worse.

Only got to see the highlights, but you have to give credit to Prior for his century on debut, there isn't much more wrong he can do after his knock. Obviously it doesn't a Rhodes Scholar that time will tell if he is the Real McCoy or not. But the lack of homework by the West Indies camp was a joke. Why they kept bowling short to him, when he was constantly pulling and hooking the balls to the boundry was madness IMO. And it isn't though footage of him playing wouldn't exist that they could track down. Even still, after a couple of fours from said shots, wouldn't it occur to them that maybe he is good with that shot and don't feed it to him? I couldn't believe the lack of professionalism that was shown.

Wasn't impressed by the captaincy, the bowling or the fielding. Granted I don't expect them to have the budget that the Australians would have, but a full-time fielding coach is really worth the money spent. And I would like to know what is so wrong with having a spinner in their camp?

But finally, with all due respect, Marc, Richard, and Piscine, please just give it a rest between you three. What the hell do you three possibily hope to achieve? It's just a bloody cricket forum, where you wouldn't know each other, even if you walked down the same street.

I don't mean to be rude or anything, but it brings down the quality of CC and it is one reason why I'm not don't visit CC all that much compared to what I used to.
