I suggest you brush off some tapes of Gower and see how he plays the great fast bowlers of yesteryear - a thing of beauty
He was similar to Mark Waugh - easily good enough to average in the 50s in a really strong era but didnt cash in and protect his wicket just for the sake of improving his stats
I'm not sure that I'd go along with that. Admittedly his track record against Aus was very good, so I can see why you'd rate him so highly, but even so he often struggled when Aus managed to put out a decent attack, which wasn't always the case in the Gower era. I don't recall him doing a thing when Lillee played, for instance. Against other sides, his performances against the great fast bowlers weren't often all that special. I don't remember many scores against WI apart from one hundred in 1980/81. Or against Imran, come to think of it.
Which doesn't alter the fact that he was a very fine player, and DG vs Thorpe is an interesting contest. I'd gladly settle for both nowadays.
