Dhoni is a good batsman and certainly he shouldn't be named along with the likes of Afridi and Razzaq.

Dhoni might be underrated in CW but in India he is rated even above Gilly (in general), which of course is so.. dire.
I really rate Dhoni as both a Test and ODI batsman, much better than any other option India have IMO. He may appear unorthodox and come across as a bit of a slogger, but he certainly has more strings to his bow than that.

He had a poor WC (although India only got to play 3 games) which is mainly why people seem to be bagging him. Still a highly dangerous and effective player. Anyone who's scored over 2000 ODI runs averaging 45 at strike rate of nearly 100 is. Test record will improve.

Still reckon Karthik is a better option in Test. He is a far better keeper and is batting is coming along nicely. Considering he's made some Indian sides as specialist batsmen, its not like his batting is a weak link or anything.

What's Dhoni's HS + average outside of the subcontinent? (in ODI's)
CBF findind the exact details but his record in Africa (South Africa/Zimbabwe) is 312 runs @ 44.57 (67* HS) - 9 mts, Americas 124 runs @ 17.71 (46* HS) - 8 mts

Only really failed in the West Indies really out side Asia.

EDIT: If you want to do the whole not playing against Zimbabwe thing, his average is 31.5 in Africa, with a HS of 55

Don't think Dhoni played enough games outside Asia yet to really factor into the discussion of how good he is really.

And when he has played outside of asia, he hasnt performed. But, TBH, he has a long way to go, still. He is young and, IMO, does not have enough experience of playing teams at places outside of the subcontinent. The england tour may be a good indicator of how good he is. With that said, the SA tour was also meant to be a tester...but Dhoni failed that test quite miserably.

Exactly. He's failed in West Indies - that's about it. It's too easy to jump on a strokeplaying subcontinental player for "he's no use outside the subcontinent" and too many people do it, too quicky. 10 games (which is all he's played outside the subcontinent against ODI-class teams) is nothing at all, especially when it's out of 62.

guys like afridi, razzak & dhoni will tear him apart when he tour in sub continent.
The key word being sub- continent there... if it was outside of sub-cont than pretty good chance all of Razzaq, Afridi and Dhoni would get owned by Tait most of the time.

I absolutely love the way that still no-one has commented on my digging-up a thread from 2-and-a-half years ago...

The poor punctuation and lack of CAPS.

Given that these days you're one of the leading lights of these parts, it's always funny to go back to the start of someone's posting and find a slightly less carefully-made posting style. I once did the same to Andre and looking for that post I found an example from SJS.

The actual content wasn't too far off though, although I wonder if you still feel the same about him wanting to hurt people?

You'd find some of my earlier posts much more hilarious I'm sure. The effort to punctuate properly was clearly there even back then, however my typing skills were dire and my sentence structure was far inferior to what it is now. My knowledge of cricket was especially bad as well.

Ah, yes...

Anyway - I remember you from back in ' day, and I thought you were a pretty middling member TBH - nothing outstanding like you have been since my most recent return, but a bit like Martin in "when he's there, he's worth a read".

How did he fail miserably? Did quite well in the ODIs, and performed poorly in one Test and average in another. Not a miserable failure by any means.

Indeed, Dhoni's ODI performances were one of the few standouts. And most of the discussion doesn't seem to centre around Tests, since Tait has only played 2 so far.
