Being more aggressive is a strength if you can do it properly as Ponting can, but its not one to put too much weight on.

Ponting is better than Dravid, atm anyway, in both forms. But unlike Matt79, I'd say whilst Ponting has taken over Dravid in tests, Dravid has closed the gap in ODIs compared to back in 2005 when this thread was made.

Dravid's incredibly good in ODIs nowadays.

I'm really quite surprised, I thought Ponting would be ahead by a mile.

Guess it must be personal taste, but when I watch Ponting, I'm amazed. When I watch Dravid I'm not.

For the record, I'm not Indian or Aussie.

Ponting is quite ahead as the best batsmen in the world - which, of course, includes Dravid.

This post is interesting:

I doubt if Ponting will score 40 test centuries. We cant just extrapolate his best years in the game and assume the rest will be similar.

He has got 21 centuries in 85 tests. Every player tapers off towards the end of his career. So one can safely assume that in a long career, the second half will AT best be as good as the first half. Thus to get 40 centuries, Ponting needs to play another 80 test matches and considering he will miss some for various reasons, he will need at least. 8-10 years to play these. Its unlikely that he will play for so long. Not impossible but very unlikely.

We are seeing Tendulkars performance tapering off. Same will happen to Ponting in three years time. Then the decline comes fast, in most cases.

There are plenty of examples.
And yet he's still gone on, two years later. I would be surprised if he didn't get 40 centuries now.

I disagree, Ponting is a far superior player than Dravid in ODIs. For someone that bats primarily at 3 and 4 Rahul Dravid has a very poor conversion rate of 50s to 100s and its something that he needs to improve on.

Is the 2007 ODI batsman Ponting that much better than the 2005 one?

Because the 2007 Dravid is better than the 2005 one, so IMO he's closed the gap a little. Never claimed Dravid to be among the top 10 ODI batsmen or anything like that, but his performances over the last few years have been superb.

Considering he has 33 of them at the moment, I think 40 is quite acheivable. He could set himself the benchmark of 50, he wouldn't be too far away from it when he retires.

Yea, Ponting is better now, though he needs to improve his average of 12 to cement his place. But even accounting for that deficiency, he is still better.

i think in the top order, and his performances against Australia in ODIs have left a lot to be desired not just recently but always. For mine hes been pretty good but nothing special over the years.

I think Dravid and Ponting are poles apart as players because their techniques are completly different and the way they bat is also completly different.

But Ponting is definietly a better player than Dravid because he is an impact player and Dravid is an anchor man (who in his own right is an invaluable player to have in any team).

Ponting's aggression is one thing that makes him more dangerous than Dravid.

In real cricket, aggression is far ovverrated. Ponting is a better players ignoring the aggression factor though.

Why? That's like saying (in more extreme terms), that Afridi is a better player than Kallis, because Afridi is an impact player.

This should be an interesting poll as one gets the impression that the majority of Cricketweb members would rank these two as the third and fourth greatest batsman of our time (after Lara and Tendulkar, obviously). But who in your opinion is superior?.
Obviously?? I'd rate Ponting as number 1 and Dravid 2, followed by Tendulkar and Lara..

i would keep it simple and easy. Ricky Pointing by miles. it is always entertaining to watch him bat while dravid makes u fall a sleep.

Thats a really poor reason to not choose Dravid...the next thing ur gonna say is that u hate test matches because there isnt a six or 2 every over! Trust me....SS wouldnt be happy abt that!

Ponting for mine.

Both are of course fantastic players but i think Ponting's style of batting is more valuable to a team in the long run and he has a higher average anyway.

who is ss? why he would be upset? i think everyone should be mature enough to respect each other's point of views. Dravid plays his own and only own shots. he never take risk ad play aggrassive cricket. what i love is aggrassive cricket. i love test cricket but only players like Dravid and Kallies make it un watchable for me.

That is total nonsense.
