United bought 31 players in over that time period (and sold a lot more). 15 million devided by 31 is just under £500000 a transfer, and over the time period it's under £2 million a year. For a big club, that's not a lot, in the late 80s and early 90s.

I personally don't see at as anything to get proud of as an Englishman anyway, if it does happen. I mean there will be a few Englishmen playing, but it's hardly a great indication of English football. There's four clubs who dominate everything, and the rest may as well be on a different planet

It was because he was ageing, diminishing in ability and going to be released in the summer - they saw no point in playing him any further.
