4-3-3 with Owen in the middle wouldn't work. If you're going to do that you need someone who can either hold the ball up well (Drogba) or at least hold it for long periods of time (Henry). Owen is a poacher, wouldn't be any good at the role.
Hmm harsh on Owen but overall you are right about how his effectiveness or rather lack of effect would be in that role.

4-3-3 with Rooney on the wing?

The same sort of thing that Sven got slated for you mean?
Certainly has the ability to play well in that position based on the few times i've seen him play in that role for United. But like most English players, they struggle to reproduce club form with the national side.

4-3-3 is simply a dire idea, I don't really like United using it either, although I accept it is occasionally necessary where we'd get beaten 4 v 4 in midfield.

The reason United have had such great success with it is the fact that all the components are there for that system to work.

There's 2 (Carrick, Fletcher) defensive midfielders to cover the defence and spray the ball about, 1 attacking midfielder (Scholes) and then blistering pace in the front three and all 3 of them are capable of carrying the ball great distance without losing it i.e. dribblers and Rooney can hold people off if it gets played into him.

It worked for Chelsea because they have the same kind of players. Old school was DM (Makelele & *can't remember*), AM was Lampard, 3 very quick players up front with Drogba, Duff and Robben. Drogba can hold the ball up obviously. The similarities are remarkable and also, it's my belief that the reason Chelsea haven't done quite as well this season is that they have tried to encorporate the system to the players (i.e. Ballack and Shev) rather than the players to the system.

England don't have those players in their squad and it would require something radical for that to happen and Turnip #2 ain't going to do it.

Exactly right. It's not about certain formations denoted by a series of numbers, it's about what areas of the pitch players operate in, and you can't force a player to be effective in an area he's not used to being in.

Rooney on the wing is a terrible thing, for United as well as England. aussie must be watching very different games to myself. Usually that's the reason we've done poorly in Europe. Once we moved him to a more central position, we fired in a big way.

I see Andriy Shevchenko has said that Kaka is better then Cristiano Ronaldo. Well of course he would say it since they are probably still mates from when they played together at Milan. It would be tempting to put Ronaldo ahead but then Kaka did make Heinze and Evra his bitch in the Champions League game the other day and was really the only Brazilian who did anything in the World Cup (where was Ronaldinho again?) so I'm not sure.

Disagree vehemently, obviously Rooney as an individual is more effective down the middle, however the team definitely performs better overall in certain situations with the 4-3-3.

Hehe, Jose can have a legitimate whinge this week, we were playing with 12 players

altogether now: 'Phil Neville is a red, he hates scousers.....'

Great comeback by utd, shame we only play in teh 2nd half at the moment. Nice to see Eagles get a game, and indeed a goal. If we win at the council house next week, Chelsea MUST win to keep it alive.... how nice would it be to clinch the title there... Then they can present the trophey at our next game :)

Heard Kranjcar scored a cracker for Pompey. Must say I do like the round of applause they give when a footballing legend dies, I think it is a lot better tribute and a way of saying 'thanks' then just a minutes silence.

Nixon's team won. Most frustrating season.
