Fleming steps down as OD captain

I once read that Martin Crowe was a tremendous critic of Stephen Fleming when he was made captain. Can anybody expand on this for me? What did Crowe say about Fleming that was negative?

Martin Crowe is an Aucklander. What do you expect?

I am not entirely sure on that question though, might have a look around the school library and find Crowe's book or something. Crowe's already said the selectors should be banned from picking anyone under 23 and Fleming was a young skipper, so it was probably the age thing.

And yeah i would say piggy would be a good skipper. he's got a hard streak in him which i like.

Have to say that it's disappointing that people are focusing on the negative instead of celebrating the positive. Stop comparing him with the people of the past and instead focus on the fact that, during his tenure as captain, he was the best there was according to people at home and a large proportion of those from other nations, too. If he wasn't captain for the last decade, New Zealand would have been a worse side for it.

Thanks, Flem.

Good decision by fleming, considering that he is 34 now....and wont play in the nxt WC ( most probably). Vettori will be the nxt captain IMO.

This was our worse performance in the World Cup since i saw my first World Cup in 1992 IMO.

How many good performances did we actually have? We beat a hopeless England and West Indies team, lost to Australia heavily, and lost to Sri Lanka twice heavily. The only remotely good performance was against South Africa and who was our best bowler? Craig McMillan, that says it all.

Did we see any fight in the big games? Did anyone apart from Styris stand up and be counted? No. Did we appear to have any tactics to counter the likes of Tait, McGrath, Murali and co? No.

I could go on. Very disappointed by the lack of fight from our players. All talk and no action yet again...

That was the thing that annoyed me most of all, I can handle the fact that we lost but when we put up such a spineless effort it just really guts me.

Thats a good point TBH. When watching the coverage on TV, the commentators said how excellent NZ have been throughout the WC and then just collapsed in the semi final. But, TBH, they never really performed really well....never looked in total control like SL or the aussies. They have been pretty much like SA in that they have not been perfect and that there is a lot of improvement needed. Thats why i always felt that an Aus V SL final was the most fair, TBH!

I agree. Fleming is a hero. Anyone that knocks him should be put in a sumo wrestling match with Dwayne Leverock as punishment.

Interested to see what Vettori will be like as captain. Didn't he pull off a domestic win with a crazy declaration a while back?

Absolutely. The NZ domestic season thread had a bit about it...mostly us rubbishing the declaration before being humiliated by the result.

Anyone got a link to the scorecard for it?

Never really was too certain over Dan's leadership skills. Tactics, fine. Leading players, being a man-manager, talking to media? Uncertainty for me on all fronts as I honestly just don't know. Then again, not sure anyone else is a better option with regards to those areas anyway. And tactics are the main area where we need to do well, I suppose.

Just hope Bond has four more years left in him, personally (sadly I doubt this given his injury-ridden career). I'm not sure if there are any up and coming bowlers to take his place.

Fleming at times has shone bight in NZ innings over his career, none more so than this innings in the 2003 wc vs RSA. Flem had should never had doubted his own or his teams ability to chase down 290 runs today, some one should have emailed this story to him during the lunch break. http://content-nz.cricinfo.com/ci/content/story/126719.html
I always remember this innings everytime i think Flem doesnt deserve to be in the team and it reminds me he could really fight tough circumstancers sometimes.
