It was another less-than-convincing showing by the Blues in the second of their 2-day matches. The struggle this time came against an experienced Marabella Maroons lineup, exposing many flaws in the Cricket Web Blue team as it builds toward the new season.
Day 1: Morning Session
The Maroons batted first after winning the toss and progressed with ease against the new ball. The openers added 31 before they were separated, and Matt Smith continued his return to Blue colours with a superb outswinger. Denis Rampersad soon followed his partner, with both batsmen registering 14. On this occasion it was Callum McKern who initiated the breakthrough, albeit through an appalling shot choice. Smith pegged back Tam's offstump and the home side slumped to 38-3. Spreading his bowlers carefully, Camps entered the attack. He quickly found the probing edge of Badree's blade, but Sean Fuller could not hold the opportunity. It was a continuation of some worrying poor form by Fuller this preseason.
Before the game Camps was asked of the threat of ex-West Indies batsman, Lincoln Roberts. He noted that Roberts is the type of batsman who can be destructive but is more likely to implode. It was a keen observation, especially as Roberts hooked May-Quinlan into the lap of McKern at long-leg. Nicholas Ferreira and Samuel Badree carried the score to 97-4 at the luncheon interval.
Day 1: Afternoon Session (Pre-Tea)
Early success for the Blues, with McKern's first delivery spiking up at Ferreira then lobbing to first slip. A sharp start to the session's bowling exploits was not matched with fielding, however. Jack Ullungura and James May-Quinlan dropped catches off the shaky Khan, and the mistakes would prove more costly than initially realized. But Williams would not be perturbed. His top-spinner cannoned into Badree's middle stump to end a promising 23. A flighted legbreak could have siezed another wicket for Williams, as Goff just failed to grab onto a flash of a chance at slip.
One more wicket fell in the session, but it was the claim of Smith, and to an attrocious swipe. Marlon Sanders the man out due another catch by McKern - 175 for 7.
Day 1: Afternoon Session (Post-Tea)
Thanks in part to a shelled chance by Smith at mid-on, Navin Chan and Imran Khan found a difficult life more comfortable in expanding their partnership after tea. The two added 35 before the break and put on 36 more in almost 17 overs after it. Rhys Williams continued to plug away commendably with his wrist-spin. He never allowed the batsmen comfort and it was always likely that he would be the man to break the parnership.
He did so with a clever flighted delivery, dismissed Chan, and then wrapped up the final two wickets in quick time. Figures of 4-31 were exceedingly flattering but also richly deserved by the Blues' latest signing. But a total of 238 all out was far greater than Camps would have expected to conceed. Yet it was not for lack a good surface, as Cribb showed with his pleasant cameo of 28. The right-hander showed great promise in his little innings and peppered the offside boundaries with four cool shots. It took a sparkling bit of fielding by Jon Lyons to claim his wicket. Brendan Goff turned a ball off his hips first up to ease into his innings. The Blues met stumps at 46-1.
Day 2: Morning Session
Jack Ullungura still does not appear settled and was shizophrenik in his turnaround on the second morning. He began the day on 9 from 37 balls, but was urgent in getting to 23 from a further 21 balls. The dismissal served as a cue for Goff to expand his reach. The Cricket Web XI captain raced along and then witnessed another soft dismissal of Fuller for 11. Goff got to fifty from 58 balls and the Blues sat comfortably at 129-3 when lunch was taken early due to poor weather.
Day 2: Afternoon Session (Pre-Tea)
Goff charged onward with confidence. When the seamers were replaced by spinners, he calmly shifted into his dancing shoes. Goff chipped down the track and launched Rampersad's offspin over long-on for six. Wilshere was not quite as lucky, instead perishing to a Sanders' offbreak. Two balls was all Sanders needed to work over the skipper too. Camps walked back for a quiet duck, thankfully not shifting attention from the brilliance on display at the other end.
Badree flighted a full toss to Goff and he deposited it over midwicket for six. The shot carried Goff to 88 and he notched two more boundaries in bring up his hundred 7 balls later. The milestone took 85 balls to achieve, and Goff's second 50 took only 27 balls. At the other end Alex Crampton was growing in confidence, though content in playing a supporting role. Goff raised his 150 from 128 balls and then Crampton reached to 50 with his 80th. When Crampton stepped out smack his second six off Roberts' medium pace, the partnership crossed 150. Another 35 runs needed 33 balls and Goff's epic knock was finally concluded. Upon his demise, trapped in front to a slower ball, Camps called the innings to a close.
Trailing by 113 runs, the Maroons were 2-0 at tea.
Day 2: Afternoon Session (Post-Tea)
Two rain delays amounted to 60 minutes lost in the final session of the game, but it likely did not affect the result. The Blue bowlers looked far from dominant again, though McKern showed definite signs of form with his 3-wicket haul. Worringly though, Smith and May-Quinlan struggled to maintain a decent line and looked severely impotent for the most part (cue Cameron).
Samuel Badree played an excellent little innings of 34, and Marabella closed on 139-5.
