Ugh, sick of seeing this media style garbage regurgitated by football fans. All this "must win" crap and writing people off after a couple of games and so on. England are highly likely to qualify if they win 4 of their remaining 6 games, particularly if they take points off Russia and Croatia or they get the odd draw as well. As for Russia away, Russia have already dropped 4 points at home, so it's not an automatic defeat like some are implying.
So you really think we're more likely to win in Russia than in Estonia? Right. The four upcoming games are simply our most winnable ones. If we drop points in them we'll need results in Moscow & at home to Croatia.

I agree we are likely to qualify if we win four of our remaining games, what I don't want to happen is for us to have to go to Russia to win, because, frankly, we won't. We are capable of a draw, which should be good enough if we beat them at home.

I don't see any reason why England can't win in Russia, it's football and England might actually have gotten a kick up the arse by then. Obviously the odds are against England, but they're that not that much against England. By the time England play Croatia Croatia might well have already qualified, England would be favourites at home anyway.

Have you ever watched Kevin Davies play?

Clearly not if you'd pick him ahead of Nugent.
Yes I have watched quite alot of the games he's played in and he does give away alot of fouls but he's hardly a dirty player like a Keane for eg.I'd hardly say a Championship striker like Nugent is much better than him TBH.

Hmm. I remember the 94 qualifying campaign. We dropped points at Wembley to Norway & Holland (after being 1-0 & 2-0 up respectively) leaving us needing to get results away. We lost 2-0 on both occasions.

Obviously we can win in Russia, I just don't think we will & I'd rather not have to.

England are not going to win in Russia. One victory against the might of Andorra doesn't change anything. For 50 minutes of that game they were abysmal. The pressure of playing at home might affect the England players IMO.

Presumably due to the fact that those players are not really world class?
Exactly.What is "world class" anyway?.
World class, to me, means capable of competing at the highest levels of world football consistently, and being good enough to be one of the first names on the team sheet at any club in the world.

Unless someone else has a wildly different definition, that would mean that at the very least, we have 5 world class players - Terry, Ferdinand, Gerrard, Rooney, Owen. There's a case to be made for including Ashley Cole, Joe Cole, Gary Neville and Lampard in that bracket too.

Virtually all of our first XI play for teams that regularly compete in the latter stages of the Champions League - the majority of them are key players in those teams.

To me, anyone who's claiming that we have few or no world class players is merely attempting to **** on our parade. There are few teams in the world who could match us if football was played on paper.

Anti-Southampton bias shining through here!
Haha, of course. :D

James, Johnson, Campbell, O'Neil, Davis and Taylor for England!

When have Terry,Ferdinand and Rooney played consistently well for England?.Rooney hasn't scored for England in his last 16 games for England ffs.To bad football isn't played on paper.England can have all the supposed "world class" players they want but they've done f*** all since 66 TBH.A team is based around work rate, commitment and planning for eg Greece. They didn't have "world class" players did they?.Terry and Rooney have been consistenly poor for England for the last year. You can't argue about that no matter how well they play for their clubs. The pace of International football is not suited to them as they ply their trade in the Premiership where it's a hundred mph.Apart from Gerrard what England player has any sort of form at the moment. If Gerrard picks up an injury England are going to be seriously f***ed.

Rooney wants a good slapping, frankly. If the papers are to be believed McClaren tried to administer one after the Israel game, but it ended up as a stand-up row. I have no way of knowing the truth of the matter, but I can guarantee you he wouldn't have tried it on with Sir Alex like that becuase he knows he'd be out on his arse.

Although, tbf to the tubby little pikey, part of the reason why he looks more impressive for ManUre may have something to do with the fact he's being supplied by Messers Giggs & Ronaldo from the flanks rather than Lennon & Downing.

What do you mean "may".Giggs and Ronaldo are a billion times better than Lennon and Downing.

Can we all now dispel the myth that England have "world class" players.?
Didn't you just get the names of 5? Rooney, Owen, Ferdinand, Gerrard and Terry are all world class. Ask any football expert with sense; Sir Alex Ferguson, Bobby Robson, Roy Keane, Arsene Wenger, Guus Hiddink. Put them under a decent manager who inspires them to play attacking football and you'll see. McClaren is a very good coach and assistant manager but not international standard IMO.

So what have all these supposed "world class " players done for England eh?.A football team is not built around world class players and nor it should be.I'm not taking about how Terry,Gerrard,Rooney,Ferdinand or Owen play for their clubs TBH.Look England can say they have as many world class players as it takes to get to timbabto TBH.Until they actually perform on a consistent basis at international level then they can't be granted "world class".I thought this was meant to be England's "golden generation"...

You're contriving to argue against yourself.

If players play consistently at the highest level on the world club stage then they're world class. Simple as.

The fact of the matter is that the moment they pull on the three lions their performances are yards below what we have seen they are capable of for their clubs.
