Kumble announces ODI retirement

About time he quit, what is the point of a leggy who can't even turn the ball? This is another great time for indian cricket as this is another oppurtunity for a young spinner to emerge just as harbhajan did!!

Much more often than you ask this question, you should look at Stuart McGill ( ie, i get-owned-vs-good-spin-playing-teams) and ask " what is the point of a leggie who can't land two consecutive balls on the same square foot on the pitch ?"

not doubting he has taken hundreds of wickets or the fact that he was a good player, but he never turned a ball. and it is about time the old boys made room for some young blood, Dravid, Ganguly, Kumble, Tendulker etc. Also the fact they don't have any world class seemers (sreesanth in a year or so) highly dents their hopes of becoming a good side again.

and c-c Stuart MacGill is pants. Brad Hogg is much better than him, also I can't believe STuart Clark hasn't been involved so far. He was class in the ashes!

Didn't Kumble retire 2 years ago from odi cricket, it was just a formality to take him to his last WC just as a token of respect towards him.

He was the official photographer of the Indian team in the WC, he was doing a great job off the field with his Nikon or was it a Cannon.

Never a great ODI bowler, but an Indian legend nevertheless. Atleast Ramesh Powar will get some more games now, you would think.

He never retired, but he's only ever been a bit-part ODI player for the last 3 years or so.

Not just good spin-playing teams at all - MacGill's done little of note in his entire career except have the odd sensational Test here and there (and occasionally 2 in a row).

He certainly did. But his Googly and his Leg-Break turned on a decent pitch that offered a bit to the spinners. He just didn't bowl them all that often.

yeah macgill is pants!! Hogg is class, he causes decent players problems rather often and poor players (england) struggle against him with hi smixture of wrong'uns and standard chinaman stuff!

Hogg's no better than MacGill, TBH. Both are actually pretty good at the variations, but neither are that accurate. Hogg more so than MacGill, of course, but still neither have terribly notable Test records.

Which is more than the non-Warne/Murali spinners over the past decade or so.

Exactly. For all MacGill's supposed faults he has an excellent record that not to many other spinners have. He's just been very unlucky that Warne was Australia's premier spinner and the fact that Warne and MacGill didn't play much together.
