Do you agree with Sunil Gavaskar’s assessment of the Australians?

Whatever it takes!!!
Yup, Gavaskar is an ICC official which only makes his comments regarding the aussies even more shocking, since he is an ICC representive he needs to make sure that he is unbiased in his opinion.

Gavaskar doesn't miss a single chance to pull the Aussies down, he made a huge issue about Matro pushing the Indian minister [Sharad Pawar](which surely wasn't intentional) during C-T final presentation ceremony.
just following his CEO, I guess. ;)

Well, no-one could say that Ponting's boring.

Most captains would've shrugged off the comments and thrown in a few staples like "we're just trying to concentrate on our own game."

Anyway, pretty much game, set and match to Ponting methinks
isn't that a surprise? ;)

Ponting should first explain his behavious vis-a-vis Srinath and at 2005 Ashes and during the DLF Cup. He should be the last person to take up this argument, I reckon.

And Gavaskar is a hypocrite, BTW. Doesn't mean the comments were wrong though. The Commentator was but the comments themselves aren't.

For standing up for his team when an ICC Official makes ridiculous comments about them?
no, for saying "I am better than your lot in cricket. So shut up!".

That is just schoolboy behaviour. But its no surprise, given who said these comments.

I think, the point is, that anyone who makes such a comment is pretty much a hypocrite. Whether that person, or their team.

The standards applies to all, not just to those who happen to be dominating Cricket at that time.

yeah, it does, Kazo, but it is always obvious why one would look at the champion team first... That is just how it works, in all sports, basically.

You get to the top by being the best. Your behaviour is a non-factor as long as it's not disruptive to your winning chances. Whether everyone else seems to make an example of the champions has nothing to do with the Aussie side and is, indeed, a problem that everyone else has to get over. If the Aussie side were the worst offenders - constant ones too - then I could see your point, regardless if they were champions or not.

Let's say the Aussies weren't the champions and the South Africans were. Would they make better champions? How about the Indian side?

In the end: no one is perfect, Aussies accept their imperfections, and life goes on.

Punter is a passionate and honest (sometimes brutally honest) bloke, thats why we hear such outbursts from him ever so often this time around he was provoked without doubt by Mr.Gavaskar.

I think Ponting would have been far more sober in his reply to Gavaskar's comments if he or his team would have been involved in any on-field disciplinary problems off-late, but Gavaskar's comments just came out of nowhere which is most suprising.

Random? Hardly. It was anything but random.
Yes, random. Ponting started off with an excellent (and obvious) point but ruined it with that irrelevant comment about India's recent run of poor form. I know you're not that biased that you can't see through that. As others have mentioned, that's quite childish and reactionary coming from a captain or any professional tbh.

nah, not like that, mate. I meant that being the best, you need to try and set an example to others. If RSA were the champions and behave as they do now, I will criticize them too. Same with India. Just making the point that as champs, one needs to set the standards in behaviour too.

He is passionate and honest. I actually like him as a player and captain apart from a few instances (namely the **** in Malaysia) but he's not very mature.

Are you suggesting that the recent form of Indian cricket is relevant to Gavaskar calling the Aussies poorly behaved? Either that or you didn't bother to read up on the thread before commenting or you are convinced that Ponting can never be wrong.
Or that you missed the point...

Gavaskar, of ALL people, shouldn't be nearing himself to such arguments or criticisms. What Ricky Ponting is suggesting is that it is because they're the best that they're going to be subject to more criticism. But someone like Gavaskar should be more worried about the Indian team improving, rather than criticising something he(Sunil) has gained notoriety for. It isn't a random point at all. Immature, sure, but random? It's just as funny as Gavaskar building up the Aussies with their success, then mentioning their behaviour as if it's an honest observation.

Gavaskar is stirring **** and Ponting has stirred it back. Easy, eh?

I know what you're saying HB. The problem I have with it is that champions are not obligated to be examples for all. SURE, others will look up to them, but that is THEIR problem. There are very few greats in any sport that really set an example in terms of behaviour as well. I, for one, would really wish that society turns away from such notions as it's a tad unrealistic and a bit dangerous.

The Aussie team aren't the devils in disguise, they're just not as gentlemanly as many would dream of them to be.

well, I guess to each his own. I am not asking them to not sledge and stuff. You know, just keep it away from implying friends and family and be a bit more considerate of other cultures and stuff. Also, not try to intimidate the umps so much (I know Viv did it too, but it doesn't become right because of that). And if they stop and other team keep doing it, will definitely fault the other teams on that too. These things shouldn't really part of the game.

I'll give you that one. Far more immature than random.
