The Gurs' seconds and youth team succeeded where their more senior counterparts had failed, in delivering us their first win in February.
Tom's Halsey's Sloggers won the toss and bravely elected to bat on a slow pitch. Indeed, eight overs in rocking on 13/3, it looked very much as though that fine line between bravery and foolishness had been crossed, as Wilde bagged a brace and Zonke took one in their opening ten over burst. But courage once again came to the fore, as Chukwu and LittleFair led the counterattack with a spirited stand of 63 in twelve overs to put the Essex Boys very much back in the hunt. But the trail to a two hundred plus score began to go cold when Zonke returned for his second spell, to have Littlefair brilliantly caught in the Covers by Creasy for 23, and fourteen runs later they'd well and truly lost their way when an arm-ball from Stubbs and a needless run out accounted for keeper Bruce and all-rounder Connor with the score on 90. But the tail deserves much credit for continuing to wag defiantly in support of Chukwu, as he added first 23 with Shackell (6), and then 18 with Lawes (12). But the inevitable did eventually happen, as Manzini trapped chukwu in front for a combative 62, to leave the visitors 137 A/O.
In reply few of The Gurs' second-stringers did much to further their cause for a promotion to the full side, with part-time Feeb bats Bewers and Wilde perishing for 9 and 14 respectively - followed in short order by 32YO veteran Brammer for 2, and Wynne-Willson for a single, all before the fifty was posted. So it was left to debutant Comp/Med Wharton and Vayro's first ever signing, Comp/Abs Creasy to sprinkle some glitter on this dog**** of an innings, which they did with some aplomb. Wharton, who'd never picked up a bat in anger before yesterday, struck six authorative 4s and 2 commanding maximums on his way to a debut 77*, while old-hand Creasy combined in his 38*, nudging for singles with some brutal play square of the wicket, to guide the Gurs home without the loss of another wicket.
With no prospect of furthering his career at The Gurs, Vayro has reluctantly come to the decision not to stand in Wharton's way, should he wish to move elsewhere - Although someone will first have to meet the club's £50K valuation of the 17YO starlet.
No pops today, Noons WK and Greening's Conc are taking an age. I thought WK trained slightly quicker than batting? But last time Noon's WK popped to Prof on the same day as his batting, this time around his batting is Strong+2WKs, with no sign of a WK pop. Scaly, Sorry mate, I know we all treat you like the Pop B*tch, but if I give you their stats, please would you mind telling me how far off they are?
