heres a counterpoint
THE DECISION LIES SOLEY WITH THE UMPIRE!
take a philosophical stance and look at the issue. why is Hair's decision in despute?!
THAT is the point i am stressing, and the point that seems to be bouncing off skulls.

this entire fiasco is the result of a decision that happend on the cricket field. a decision that certain people didnt like and made a song and dance about it. again. THE DECISION LIES SOLEY WITH THE UMPIRES.

It's not a counterpoint because you continue to argue the one thing that everyone agrees with... yes the decision is that of the umpire and yes Hair had every right to act as he did...

This whole "fiasco" lies because the ICC has decided it no longer has the confidence in Hair's ability to function as a memeber of the elite panel... The is the perogative of the ICC... Whether one of the factors in their decision was Hairs handling of the incident in question then again so be it... and it just so happens I along with many others agree with them that his handling of the incident and others (not mind you his application of the Laws of the game) was not up to the standards of an elite level umpire...

If it was simply that the ICC think he doesn't know the rules or that he interprets them poorly surely they would seek to remove him as an umpire completely? Yet they let him continue to officiate upon the world stage barring him only from appearing in the most crucial of arenas where they are no longer confident that his ability to manage the occasion (and not just interpret and apply the laws) are up to the standards they require...

For him to now turn around and jump up and down claiming racism against all and sundry (a claim that has been levelled against him in the past and one he has always vehemntly denied) smacks of desperation and unfrotunately, true or not, enforces amongst his critics the idea that he believes at times he is bigger than the game...

ok so since you are saying the decision lies soley with the umpire, no one should do anything about it right....ok if that was the case then if a umpire was a cheat, granting bribes amd was doing partiality, no one should do anything about it. because thats what your saying...its the umpires decision and no one should question it....that said back to hair- he did make a wrong decision because there wasn't enough evidence to accuse tha pakis

Once again, no, he hasn't been proven wrong. The decision was that there was insufficient evidence to prove that Pakistan tampered with the ball, and accordingly they were exonerated. That doesn't mean Hair was wrong though, because he's not required to "prove" anything on the field of play. Hair isn't expected to prove LBW calls or anything either, because he's an ultimate authority and not a judge. An umpire doesn't need proof of anything, just their judgement.
yeah he doesn't have to prove anything but a call can still be a wrong decision smart guy. example- caught behind, umpire might think the bat did hit the ball when it really didn't. thats a wrong decision....the way hair handled the situation was exactly by the books, thats right but the decision was still wrong... and he didn't use common sense that is needed to be elite panel umpires...so he's not elite panel any more but he can still umpire in lower class cames where just doing things by the books is required

So what ?
No one is disputing that the decision lies solely with the umpire. However, if the umpire's decision, when reflected with posteririty, is consistently wrong in situations like this, it brings into question the umpire's capability to handle it.
And why do you think that since decision lies solely with the umpire, the umpire cannot be held accountable for his/her decision ?!?
A judge too is the sole decision-maker in court cases. However, a judge's decision can be scrutinized as well.

It's not even a question of the umpires decision being wrong or outside the bounds of the Laws of the game... but if the ICC believe that he is unable to handle himself or these situations in a way that they feel is appropriate then that is their right...

Remember he opted to consider the Test forfeited when Pakistan complained and protested (and later cried racist) and refused to take the penalty... now that the ICC has also acted within it's rights in deciding not to keep him on the elite panel he is doing basically the same thing (claims of racism et al)

I need you to tell me where the Pakistani board accused Hair of being a racist. Cause I can't find it, and I have the strongest suspicion you just pulled that out of your behind. Some people are crying racist, not PCB.

Hmm... so what Hair did was okay and in the rules - something that should be accepted by all boards. Then why is he being kicked out again? Loss of confidence, based on what? If he acted accordingly then the issue stops and there should be no questioning of his skills as an umpire.

ah what dont these people get...the WAY hair made the decision was by the books. BUT the decision was WRONG and so the oval fiasco happened and so the MAJORITY of the full member teams lost confident in him that he wont cause these kind of fiasco again. some bad calls can be forgiven but some on the other hand cant be forgiven. accusing a team of cheating with out evidence is a bad call and cant be forgiven...

Sorry, but u dont get it - the decision was not proven wrong

Politically unacceptable, unable to be proven by an independent tribunal months after the event, etc - yes

But not wrong.

Most people recognise that the PCB is a disgrace and it must be galling for Hair to see a team fielding drug cheats, pitch tamperers, ball tamperers and a captain with the worst disciplinary record in cricket whilst being umpired by Doctrove BUT he's really pushing **** uphill if he thinks he'll get the ICC to roll over on racism

yeah dont know why even repling to this guy but if you cant prove a pakis of cheating you shouldn't accuse them of cheating and make that whole fiasco...it must be "galling" for you to see an aussie lose his job huh :'{ its always the aussies or pom poms defending hair when the rest isn't

Exactly.

As has been said earlier, the laws of the game appoint the umpires as the sole authority on the field. The laws also give the captain the opportunity to provide a report on the state on the field and the conduct of the umpires after the game.

Inzamam disagreed with a decision made on the field, and could have raised the issue in his post match report to the ICC. Instead of acting in the interests of the game and accepting the umpires' decision, he decided to act like a petulant little child, and took his bat and ball and sulked in the dressing room.

When you refuse to play when the umpires call for play to start, you forfeit the game- just like teams have done in the past two world cups. After 45 minutes of people trying to get Inzamam to pull his head out of his backside and do the right thing, the umpires' accepted Inzamam's decision not to continue, and declared the match forfeited.

THEN the Pakistanis decide that they really DO want to play after all.

Inzamam created the debacle by not doing the one thing that cricketers are (or at least, SHOULD be) taught from day one- the umpire is right, even when he's wrong. He should have played on, and raised his complaint via his report at the end of the game. Trying to claim that the Pakistan team have some claim to the high moral ground is insane.

Hair has been strung up for nothing more than following the rules to the letter, as he is supposed to do, and being "difficult to get on with". Never mind the fact that he was the best performing umpire (as in the least decision errors) in the world before he got shafted.

The good thing is that now, the sub-continental teams will be able to act with absolute impunity, knowing that any official that wants to keep his job won't dare enforce such trivial things as the laws of cricket. Won't that be fun.

As long as they aren't allowed to get away with clear-cut infractions, like taking performance enhancing drugs or anything...

Oh- That's right...

Hate to get into this but when ICC has found Hair to be wrong upon this ball tampering issue then why people have to rant again and again . You know what this is the basic problem with some people because they are brain fed and trained by their families in a bizarre way and no matter how many courts will prove that Hair was wrong in the first place but they will have this piece of trash in their mind that yeah Pakistani captain did that and they all are supposed to be like this . You know what is the problem with the Pakistani team . As far as my judgment is concerned if some one dares show an ugly eye ball to them in or out the field ,they seem like not taking it and thats why pu$$ies have to rant here and there for cheating allegations . Yeah rewerse swing was labeled too and there goes the basic family training of some people in the dumper when they are also using this art by naming it "yeah now it's legal cuz Jones boy can do it now " .. This has been the problem cuz some imperial Lather soaps are not only disgracing themselves but also making other good people being judged in a bizarre way !! HUH no way Hair should officiate cuz I know by the stance , a person like him stands and be stupid and sarcastic to the fields men , I can sense such a common way of superior wanna be attitude and this has been the problem only with Pakistan in Asia that they don't give a damn about the after match rants and friends are friends and some body wants to show self - importance then he should try and save his teeth .. Thats why the problem is only with Pakistani players otherwise 2/3 of the world has the people who some what resemble their skin color .HUH !

Woolmer ordered the drug tests because rumours had been circulating for months that a player was using drugs and SHOCK, HORROR they were proved right

The players did not dispute the fact that they used drugs

They contended that they did not know they were illegal

Being a good cricketer does not go hand in hand with being a decent person - disappointing but a part of life I'm afraid

Most ppl recognize is hair being a disgrace and a racist, he was already a personan non gatta for SL, and did his level best to be chucked out of the game for good.

Oh, btw Mr Hair would have been fine with PCB had ICC had been part of the infamous 500,000 USD bribe .
