How good was Paul Nixon? What a pressure innings.

Anyone else listening to SEN?

Watson is getting a blast from every 2nd caller, not the most popular person in Australia. Probably because he's a softy.

Collingwood handled most of the pressure tbh.
And Nixon should've been out for 1, some may argue.
Not convinced by Nixon's batting at all. Liam Plunkett would have seen them home if he had to.

don't you love gits who call and blast him in his 1st game back, when really it was probably the more senior members of the team that needed blasting.....

Kicking myself that I left when Bell left as I didn't want to sit there for the remainder of the game by myself. Oh well life goes on.

Damm Collingwood is on fire, he is just been so good at rotating the strike and finding the gaps.

Does anyone else think that maybe Hussey's dream run might be over? That is 3 low scores in a row.

You should of heard the abuse he was getting from bay 15 from both Australians and English, it was brilliant.

Haha... Ponting took a gamble that didn't pay off, but it would have required an incredible disaster for England to lose from where they were at the start of Watson's over.

Soft, at this stage, for sure. Whether it's being scared of ghosts in England, or thinking he's having a heart attack in India. I agree, for once, with Keith Stackpole - the guy needs to toughen up. There's a psychological thing there with him. And he's far from a proven performer at the top of the order in International cricket. From five innings at the top of the order in the Champions Trophy he got two blobs and a twenty. His average was bloated by scoring 57* in the final when we were chasing a paltry 138. At best, in terms of International performances, the jury is still out. Fiery is perfectly justified in saying that he does not deserve a saloon passage to the key number four position, particularly at such a crucial juncture in the cricketing calendar.

Then he shouldn't play at all. You don't play someone out of position simply to give him game time at such a crucial juncture in the cricketing calendar. If Watson's batting is not effective down the order, which it appears not to be, he shouldn't be in the team, because his bowling is not good enough to keep him there on that merit alone.

The argument should be framed in terms of - Watson may be better at the top of the order than lower down, but is he good enough to occupy such a key spot? That's the question, not whether he is better than he is lower down. At best, the jury is out. So, why conduct an experiment at such a crucial time.

His bowling is very important to the team though. He's a huge improvement over looking to White and Clarke for the 5th bowler overs, and last year he was a very important part of the bowling attack. Add to that, he's a very capable batsman at the top of the order, and probably a little better than someone like Hogg at the bottom of the order, but inferior to White or a most specialist bats.

His average in the top 4 in his career is over 40, and he's made 4 of his 5 half-centuries there, while he's played about a quarter of his innings there. He's not "proven" in the top order by any means, but he's done as much as you could reasonably expect of him in the innings he's batted there, and given the importance of his bowling it's worth giving him a run there.

Basically, it comes down to putting Watson in the top order and playing him or going back to White or another batsman at 7. Given the competence of a number of our batsmen as finishers and Watson's value as a bowler, it's a no brainer as far as I'm concerned.

tbf I doubt they would be conducting this experiment if Symonds wasn't injured. With him out, and White not ready to reliably provide 6-10 decent overs a match, they needed another allrounder.

The jury is out on Hodge as well, but he's getting a run in the top order. Ditto anyone else you care to name really. The difference is, Watson's also a bowler.
