New Zealand A are thus through with a win tomorrow, with two wins and a draw. Australia A (1 win, 1 draw) and Cricket Web A (2 wins) play off for the second spot in the final assuming New Zealand A wins.
NZ haven't won a game yet, one loss to us and a draw against Australia...

Yeah, we are on top at the moment with two wins, followed by Australia with a win and a draw, and then NZ with just the draw. So CW A are already through, with NZ drawing level with Australia tomorrow if they win and Australia lose. Not sure what the tiebreaker in that instance would be.

First innings points, maybe?

Australia A won the dress rehearsal for tomorrow's final in some style, with Travis Birt and Dan Cullen marauding a somewhat toothless and one-dimensional CW attack. The CricketWeb selectors experimented by bringing in Zac Gelman for Trav Demeza, but the young Australian had a somewhat horrible time of it as he was run out in the second innings, and bowled eighteen overs for 94 with no return.

When CW batted first, it was a story of lost opportunities. Three beautiful catches were held by Moises Henriques at backward point, as Dan Cullen celebrated good figures of four wickets. He couldn't keep the pressure up after dismissing Garven, Fuller, Jasotharan (for a golden duck) and Gelman, and Cunningham and Richards battled to 56 for the ninth wicket.

Then came the onslaught. Dominic Thornely hit ten fours and three sixes as Cunningham and Rose were clattered around; Richards eventually broke through, and Fuller had two men lbw as Cricket Web thought they were hauling themselves back in at 168 for four. Instead, Travis Birt took the game away from them. With solid technique and a will to thump around the ground. Sean Fuller got more and more frustrated, and was unable to take any further wickets, and neither were sixth- and seventh-choice bowlers Smith and Garven. Richards bowled accurately, but his deliveries were quite easily negotiated, and after getting Haddin lbw he vanished from play. Eventually it was Cunningham who put a stop to the game, but by that time the Australians had already totalled 610.

The visitors faced a massive task just to avoid the innings defeat. This they did, but not after throwing away dozens of starts. The top nine all made it past 20 - only Jasotharan, who bashed his way to 75, could make to 40. Cullen was the hero once again, ripping out Garven and Fuller with big turners before Chaulk and Jasotharan committed batting suicide, to end with credible returns of eight for 162. He will be a key man to negotiate in the final.

Thornely's opening success didn't carry over to the chase, but Australia A still cantered to 37 with nine wickets in hand, and Cricket Web showed worrying signs before tomorrow's final.

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

The final match of East-Asia Pacific in this tournament ended with an embarrassing innings-and-325-run defeat to New Zealand A, who played reasonably good cricket against a tired and pressured side. Opting to bat first, Hopkins and How feasted off edges from O'Brien, taking six for 13 as the EAP side were bowled out for 89. Then Bell and Sinclair put on 241 for the third wicket, andthe match was all but over. Harris and Mills got half-centuries, Ryder two wicekts, before Mills closed off the proceedings when Areni hoiked to Sinclair.

Dropped catches put us out of the match - 7 in total! Poor ol' Chaulky put down 4 of them... I thought the bowlers bowled much better than the scorecard suggests and we created enough chances to bowl them out for a much lower total. I felt the batting went quite well too, passing 300 in each innings against a fairly reasonable attack. We can take heart from that performance, providing we can hold our catches in tomorrows final.

Hard luck, boys. Wasn't pretty from the dressing rooms for the bowlers, tell you the truth I was gutted when I was told I was going to be rested for the match before the start of play, but them's the breaks.

Atleast we know we are competitive against the best test team in the world (seconds!)!

Disappointing loss, but there's some positives, and we're still in the final. It was really the fielding that let us down there, with so many missed chances through the middle of the Australian innings.

Disappointed personally to get two starts and not make a decent score. Story of the series so far. Garven was all class again.

Re-match in the final game should be a cracker.

Commentary

Cricket Web A were competitive for five sessions and three innings - and then lost the edge completely, as a batting masterclass from Travis Birt sealed their doom.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, things started very poorly for the tourists. The first spell was admittedly fought off, but Shane Harwood castled Matt Luff, before the pitch decided to play some serious tricks. The Australians stuck to a good length and got plenty of seam movement, which had three men bowled, while Chaulk dragged a widish one to Harwood, and Fuller padded up to an outswinger that pitched on leg.

With a target of 179 to defend, and 54 for the first wicket, Fuller was brought into the attack. The results were stunning. The quick but slightly inaccurate bowling was just the thing CW needed, as Katich, Birt, Thornely, North, Haddin, Hopes and Gillespie all wandered back - and Australia A were 97 for seven, with Fuller having five wickets. They were somewhat left off the hook as Shane Harwood bashed 31, helping them to get an eight-run lead, while David Hussey hung out to dry on 38.

Batting again, Cricket Web showed promise, only to give it away to appalling shots. Nine men were caught in the second innings, only Demeza by the wicketkeeper; the tenth was Dravid, who was run out. Application was sadly lacking, even in Richards, whose 53 not out was good for its staying power but which showed remarkable disregard for the match situation - the first ball, a short one for Cullen, was pulled for six a yard over North's head. Cricket Web A still totalled 242, and thought they were in with a shout.

Far from it. Katich and Birt brought desperation into the bowling attack very quickly, but still gave up changes, and the match might have turned out differently had Birt not been given lives by umpire Hair on 34, by Weber on 43 or by Jasotharan on 65. As it were, Australia A closed the second day just 114 runs in arrears, with all ten wickets intact. Birt engaged on the slaughter, hitting eight fours and a six in the third morning session, while Katich eased to 70 not out in support. The two made it to the target without loss, scoring the highest and second highest innings of the day.

Cricket Web A 179 all out
SE Fuller 48; DL Cullen 2-15, SW Tait 2-35, JR Hopes 2-35, SM Harwood 2-36, JN Gillespie 2-45
Australia A 187 all out
SM Katich 41; SE Fuller 6-57, DP Richards 3-34
Cricket Web A 242 all out
MD Luff 67, DP Richards 53*; SW Tait 4-62
Australia A 236 for nought
TR Birt 148*, SM Katich 70*

Pretty disappointing finish there. I actually thought we were in with a good chance after Richards' knock, but we had nothing with the ball.

Birt was remarkable as well, batting out of position and all.

Second isn't bad, given the quality of the opposition.

Hmm, bad luck. Would've thought 236 was defendable on some level, but those missed chances were rather costly. Disappointing tour for me personally (assuming the selectors don't lapse in concentration and let me play a OD game), only got one chance and proceeded to make a mess of it.
