Cricket Web A v East Asia Pacific XI
in Gardens Oval

Commentary
A shellshocked Cricket Web A stared defeat in the eyes after two days' play in the Gardens Oval, but Dan Smith came up with a memorable performance to save the day and some faces in a good game of cricket throughout.
After winning the toss, East Asia Pacific went to bat with total disrespect. There were a number of silly dismissals - the four caught-behinds to Chaulk, of which three were to top edges - but Brazier stood tall, crafting 54, and smashing Demeza out of the attack. Smith was called upon to bowl the final over, removing Tavo lbw with his third ball in first-class cricket for a Cricket Web team.
Smith made a good 85, but was clean bowled by Baeau, the standout bowler of the first innings with four for 58, all well recognised batsmen. At one point CW feared they might have to concede a first-innings deficit, but Richards and Cunningham added 30 for the eighth wicket, and Demeza kept out 12 balls for a streaky three.
With a lead of 36, CW proceeded to bowl even poorer. Dunu Eliaba and Dai were gifted wide full tosses in succession, allowing Papuan Mahuru Dai to get a first-class hundred on debut. He thus made more runs in one innings than a more famed Papuan cricketer who recently visited Australia made in a series. Gimapau Keimelo also edged some boundaries, ending with 53, and the EAP side totalled 308.
With a target of 273, less than in the first innings, some would have thought nerves could have crept into the Cricket Web A team. However, Smith, Luff and Dravid showed that class eventually comes through in four-day cricket: all made fifties, smashing the Pacific bowlers around for masses of runs. The result was never in doubt once Luff had passed 50; Inao Baeau had lost his zip, while the gentle dobbers served up by the rest was taken apart.

Commentary
Those who paid for tickets to the final day of the match between Australia A and New Zealand A got to see a turnaround of epic proportions, as New Zealand A threw away an excellent position to be contented with a drawn game. Having batted well to gain a first-innings lead of 57, Sinclair, Cumming and Harris led the way to a 400-plus target; as it turned out, the declaration might have been delayed a little too long. As it was, Australia A got 91 overs, and crashed to 196 for seven with Voges and Cullen in.
Then New Zealand lost their heads. The bowling fell back on short-and-up-the-nose, duly put away by the aforementioned pair, who totalled twenty-seven boundaries in their two innings. The victory, which had sounded completely unlikely when Australia A required more than 200 in a session and a half with three wickets in hand, now had a slight chance entering the last 15 overs, but with Dorey caught behind New Zealand managed to avoid that. Tait saved the draw, however, making 14 not out, but Cullen was the Man of the Match after a brutal 93.
