Brad Hogg vs Cameron White

deeps

International 12th Man
Brag Hogg was brilliant in Australia's last world cup campaign, and I believe he is a VERY under rated bowler in world cricket. He took some vital wickets, as well as kept the runs down and consistently bowled 10 overs per match in the world cup. He was instrumental to their victories.

He seems out of favour this season, for no apparent reason, besides the rise of Cameron White. However, i'm not convinced about Cameron White as a bowler one bit. He's certainly not a wicket taker, is very expensive, his batting seems hit and miss, but his fielding is brilliant.

Hogg on the other hand, consistently takes a few wickets in a match, and keeps the runs at a decent level, is a handy lower order batsman, and his fielding is also brilliant.

The only thing White appears to have in his favour is youth. But 1 month from a world cup, should Australia be training up a youngster and robbing a proven performer of valuable match practice? Hogg has played one game this CB series, 6.3 overs, 2 for 16...

Excellent figures if you ask me.

So i did a comparison of their statistics.

* Hogg has a higher ODI batting average
* Hogg has a better ODI Economy
* White has a higher ODI Strike Rate
* White has a better ODI bowling average - he only averages ~1.5 overs a match

So White is not used as a bowler at all, 1.5 overs a match? Surely his batting is not good enough to warrant a place in the side?

There's far better batsman in Australian domestic cricket, who can bowl a bit.

What's the go?

How many times must it be said that they aren't competing for the same position?

White is in the side primarily for his batting - his bowling, which I don't rate one bit, is simply a bonus. He is selected as a batsman who can hit the ball hard and long in the final overs at #7, based on his batting form in the Ford Ranger cup.

I might as well start a McGrath v Gilchrist thread.

The selectors disagree. And quite frankly, so do I. As far as one day batsmen go, there were few in better form than White - and any who could make a claim to the spot (Hodge, D.Hussey, Katich, Jaques) aren't really suited to batting #7.

Forget his bowling. I'm sick of hearing about it. And I'm very sick of hearing him compared to Hogg, of whom he is not competing with.

Absolutely. Hogg is the specialist spinner, White is the specialist batsman. Hogg will most likely be rotated with one of the pace bowlers.

Hogg isnt making it hard for the selectors. Needs to perform for WA first.

No he doesn't, because he has done the job for Australia for years and has done nothing to deserve to be dropped.

1-39 isn't terrible anyway.

For White to keep his spot in the side, HE has to perform and stop getting out holing out in the deep.

Yeah, as has been said about 40,000 times, they aren't in competition. Hogg is not a batsman and White is not a specialist spinner. You may as well throw up figures comparing McGrath and Watson as bowlers and batsmen.

They'll both be in the World Cup squad. White's chances of being in the first XI have gone up with Symonds' injury, but he needs to make some runs first. Hogg will rotate with the fourth seamer.

Who played this number 7 hitter role in the past?

I think if White were to get injured today, Hogg would come into the side for the next match. So i do believe they are competing for the same spot.

Sure they play different roles, one is a batsman who can bowl a bit, the other a bowler who can bat a bit.

But i still believe the position they are trying to fill is the same.

Symonds, Clarke, Hussey and Watson have all done it in the last few years.

Firstly, I have doubts over whether that would be the case. In fact, I have huge doubts - it'd be Watson or Voges IMO. Secondly, I don't think that has much to do with whether they are competing for the same place.

Sure they play different roles, one is a batsman who can bowl a bit, the other a bowler who can bat a bit.
Exactly. There are 6 batting spots in the Australian one day team, plus Gilchrist who opens. White is picked as the 6th batsman. Hogg isn't anywhere near good enough a batsman for that.

You honestly reckon they'd have a lower order/tail starting at 7 of Hogg, Lee, Bracken, Johnson and McGrath?

White is playing as a batsman that can fill 2-4 overs a ODI to try and break a partnership.

Would it matter? They'd still beat any side in the world.

Wouldn't want to lose early wickets in a World Cup knockout match.
How many teams actually have players who average any more than thirty in one day cricket anyway?

Hogg can play good innings when he's needed to (did a good job yesterday) and he only averages 20 because he's normally required to play aggressively when he comes in.

Good post Deeps. Cameron White really impressed in State Cricket, but the way he has been batting in the last few ODI's shows he isn't quite experienced enough to play in the World Cup, while someone like Brad Hogg is experienced can bowl really good line and length which will be a key in the West Indies and he is no slouch with a bat. I'm not saying that White shouldn't play he just needs to get a bit of experience underneath his belt and in the future could be a great player for Australia.

Batting ability...White hasn't played enough ODI cricket to judge his ability.
If you're going to go domestic, why not judge by List A?

Test match and first class cricket isn't the best way to judge whether they will be any good at ODI's.

Cameron White is the single cleanest striker of a cricket ball I have ever seen, I can't understand why any team wouldn't pick him if he was available. His average doesn't do him any justice whatsoever.

That said, Hogg's a very under-rated bowler, and would be a real asset at number eight. Tough choice between him and one of the pace bowlers.

I think the choice between the 4th pace bowler and hogg should be based on the nature of the track. I think the aussies should not be bull headed in their selection by picking 4 quickes no matter what, i think selection should be purely on the bases of pitch and the conditions.
