Guess which pair of players are part of mediocre rating, guess which pair of players are part of strong rating:

Code:
End of Over 40: 209-4, runrate=5.23, reqrunrate=11.30 (321-3)
Preece 10-1-60-1
Nicol* 59 (59 balls)
Burgess 20 (23 balls)

Last Wicket: Harris c. Armstrong b. Preece 15 (FOW: 155/4)

39.6 . Preece to Burgess
Great fielding at backward point. He's saved at least two there.
39.5 1 Preece to Nicol
Sweeps to the deep fine leg fielder.
39.4 2 Preece to Nicol
Wheat takes a shy at the stumps, but misses! One becomes two!
39.3 2 Preece to Nicol
Strikes it firmly past Preece's outstretched hand; but a good chase limits Nicol to two runs.
39.2 4 Preece to Nicol
    That's four all the way.
39.1 1 Preece to Burgess
Dances down the pitch and swings ... the ball runs to extra cover and they make the mad dash for a single.

End of Over 39: 199-4, runrate=5.10, reqrunrate=11.18 (321-3)
Dillon 10-1-45-0
Burgess* 19 (21 balls)
Nicol 50 (55 balls)

Last Wicket: Harris c. Armstrong b. Preece 15 (FOW: 155/4)

38.6 2 Dillon to Nicol
Glances it off his legs. Long leg races round and fields on the slide. Only two runs.
And that's his fifty! Well played.
38.5 . Dillon to Nicol
That's why Street is in the team. Nicol strokes the ball into the covers and in one fluid motion Street collects the ball and returns it to Armstrong's gloves. Nicol will have to look elsewhere if he wants runs.
38.4 . Dillon to Nicol
Plays off the back foot, fielded by Appleby, no run.
38.3 4 Dillon to Nicol
Preece dived straight over it! Four runs to Nicol.
38.2 1 Dillon to Burgess
A full toss which is worked away square through the covers.
38.1 . Dillon to Burgess
Burgess has tried to pull that one, but it hit the fielder at short leg. He didn't know much about it, but Pace saved a certain four there.

End of Over 38: 192-4, runrate=5.05, reqrunrate=10.83 (321-3)
Preece 9-1-50-1
Burgess* 18 (19 balls)
Nicol 44 (51 balls)

Last Wicket: Harris c. Armstrong b. Preece 15 (FOW: 155/4)

37.6 . Preece to Nicol
Short of a length and Nicol goes back, reading the spin and jabbing down on it.
37.5 4 Preece to Nicol
He steps towards the ball and drives it to the long on boundary.
37.4 6 Preece to Nicol
It's a clean sweep, and it's cleared the boundary.
37.3 . Preece to Nicol
Good solid drive from Nicol but straight to Bunn. Should have been runs but just a dot ball.
37.2 4 Preece to Nicol
Blistering stroke by Nicol! That has flown to the boundary!
37.1 1 Preece to Burgess
Neatly turned to fine leg for a single.

End of Over 37: 177-4, runrate=4.78, reqrunrate=11.15 (321-3)
Dillon 9-1-38-0
Burgess* 17 (18 balls)
Nicol 30 (46 balls)

Last Wicket: Harris c. Armstrong b. Preece 15 (FOW: 155/4)

36.6 . Dillon to Nicol
Fullish, straight ball, shuffles forward, watchfully stroking it straight to mid wicket off the toes.
36.5 3 Dillon to Burgess
A fine, confident shot from Burgess punching this down the ground. Preece does very well to pull it back.
36.4 4 Dillon to Burgess
Short, wide, four. You can't bowl there to Burgess.
36.3 . Dillon to Burgess
No run. Burgess tries to guide it fine but misses the edge by a cat's whisker.
36.2 . Dillon to Burgess
Solid defence from Burgess as he has one eye on the run rate. Maybe he should have two eyes on it?
36.1 . Dillon to Burgess
Burgess picks the spin and plays it with a dead bat. Solid defensive play.

End of Over 36: 170-4, runrate=4.72, reqrunrate=10.86 (321-3)
Preece 8-1-35-1
Burgess* 10 (13 balls)
Nicol 30 (45 balls)

Last Wicket: Harris c. Armstrong b. Preece 15 (FOW: 155/4)

35.6 4 Preece to Nicol
That shot's as ugly as an ugly thing that fell from the top of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. Mind you, it was highly effective and he'll get four through mid wicket.
35.5 1 Preece to Burgess
On the back foot, stroked into the covers, good running.
35.4 . Preece to Burgess
Burgess pads that delivery away safely.
35.3 . Preece to Burgess
Shuffles right outside off stump to play a shortish ball, tapping it down into the covers in defence.
35.2 1 Preece to Nicol
Gently guided down to third man for the single, Pace running in to field.
35.1 . Preece to Nicol
Nicol is swinging like a rusty gate out there, it's a dot ball.

End of Over 35: 164-4, runrate=4.69, reqrunrate=10.53 (321-3)
Dillon 8-1-31-0
Nicol* 25 (42 balls)
Burgess 9 (10 balls)

Last Wicket: Harris c. Armstrong b. Preece 15 (FOW: 155/4)

34.6 . Dillon to Burgess
Nicely flighted delivery there but the batsman's left it well alone. Sensible cricket from Burgess.
34.5 . Dillon to Burgess
Stretches well forward to a fullish ball outside off stump, playing with the front pad leading.
34.4 . Dillon to Burgess
A half volley on his legs, but he missed the ball completely.
34.3 . Dillon to Burgess
Floated up full and straight, forward, defending down in close on the leg side.
34.2 4 Dillon to Burgess
Bunn dives in vain as the ball races away towards the boundary.
34.1 2 Dillon to Burgess
Burgess steps forward to meet the ball and plays it wide of the long off fielder.

End of Over 34: 158-4, runrate=4.65, reqrunrate=10.25 (321-3)
Preece 7-1-29-1
Burgess* 3 (4 balls)
Nicol 25 (42 balls)

Last Wicket: Harris c. Armstrong b. Preece 15 (FOW: 155/4)

Yeah, I thought that might be it. And it seems to be working well for you. I haven't really experimented with orders as much as I should've; I've tended to set players according to their personal temperament, more out of laziness than anything else. Going to be thinking about it a bit more closely this season.

But yeah, I'd say that against a stronger batting lineup on a flat pitch, defensive orders are very sensible. You're not likely to bowl me out, so you might as well dry up the runs. I'd hope that they'll hit out in time to make the score (particularly because your fast bowler was looking a bit knackered by the end of his first spell), but this is much closer than I like to see. :)

Re: the fast bowler (Laws, was it?); I dunno if someone else can confirm this, but I found if a fastish bowler is lacking in stamina, making sure they don't bowl more than 5 overs in a spell seems to help a bit so they don't get quite so tired. A 7-over spell first up might be a bit too taxing for the poor guy perhaps?
I wouldn't worry - you'll probably win in the end.

Your last point is a good one - my bowlers all have **** stamina. Will probably revert to sets of 5 from now on.

State 12th Man
Yep, there we go. Cheers for the game. :)

While he's getting on a bit, it might almost be worth giving Laws a stamina net for a bit if you can spare it to get him up to competent or thereabouts, unless you've got an obvious replacement trainee coming through. He seems to have a bit of batting going for him, which could be handy. I'm very conscious of the length of my tail, and he certainly added a decent amount to your score just through sticking around, as well as his personal 26.

Yeah I do have a trainee coming through, hopefully by next season Laws will be surplus to requirements, but for now he's a decent bowler.

Just been flicking through the Q&A log, a quick summary:

1. A banner will be added to Hattrick advertising Battrick in the near future, after the recode is finished.
2. No plans to change the youth system.
3. Allan didn't dimiss the possiblity of changing the FC games to 120 overs per day.
4. FC orders will have a safety mechanism to prevent teams declaring for 1.
5. Groundsmen will become more important as some point.
6. Allan will talk to the FG about deliberate relegation/throwing playoffs.
7. Allan will recruit some coding assistants once the rewrite is complete.
8. Allan likes the idea of random cup draws.
9. The five season dual-nationality rule (whatever this is?) will hopefully come in this season.
10. Some of the FC bowling orders code may be shifted into the OD game if it works correctly.
11. The Twenty20 will definitely happen this season. It should have happened last season, but Allan couldn't access the server.
12. Player form will soon be implemented.
13. Allan will investigate how the Man of the Match award works.
14. More bowlers for OD games will come in in the near future.
15. Allan will look into some sort of automatic batting training, reducing the number of sides with all-worthless tails.
16. The pitch display bug will soon be fixed.
17. International fixtures will follow the same pattern as before.
18. Morale for international teams will be looked into.
19. Battrick merchandise will be launched at some point.
20. Team fitness and TIE/PAN/GFI may be removed from the international game.

Not much else really.

The only thing particularly interesting out of the Q+A was the possibility of changing the cup draw, but it'll depend on who's in the focus group.

Scaly piscine said:
So Adam you going to bother with Summers?

And grrrr still no bid on Bunn... peasants.
Maybe, depends a bit on whether Harewood gets some more bids, he's only up to 3m at the moment. I don't really want to use up all my finances or i'll be losing 200k+ every week. There are a few others I might go for if I miss out anyway.

Finally got something half-decent from a cup game, 54k. Made 299/1 (Cuss 158*, Watkins 66*, Ashton a slow 65), bowled them out for 148 (Watkins 4-23, Baird 3-56). Watkins' averages for this season (when they get updated) are looking nice, 282 @ 282, and 20 wickets @ under 5 apiece.

Next cup match:

Strong Arm Steady
Top Order: strong
Middle Order: competent
Lower Order: abysmal
Seam Bowling: proficient
Spin Bowling: competent
Fielding: feeble

Should be closer but will be TIE'ing again.

Well I've got a bid on Bunn so I'm highly likely to outbid anything you'd be willing to pay.

gay idea. really gay

in other news duggan, and rich, my new wk trainee, are going bizerk in my round 3 cup match. surely 400 will be a formality from here. only 296 needed from 246 balls ffs.

End of Over 9: 104-0, runrate=11.56
Aubrey 5-0-62-0
Rich* 50 (24 balls)
Duggan 51 (31 balls)

after an awesome debut, Rich departs for 70 off only 43 balls. Now hopefully Duggan and Waddell can see the team through to 400+, 246 needed from 210 balls

End of Over 15: 154-1, runrate=10.27
Marsden 1-0-7-1
Duggan* 72 (45 balls)
Waddell 7 (4 balls)

Last Wicket: Rich c. Ohanlon b. Marsden 70 (FOW: 146/1)

Looks like it could be one of those games where the run rate goes down during the slog overs...

9. The five season dual-nationality rule (whatever this is?) will hopefully come in this season.
Am assuming that's where if, say, an Indian player plays in Australian clubs for five seasons, he can then represent Australia or India
