Battle of the Legends

adharcric

International Coach
Round of 64, Battle 25

We shall define a legend of cricket on the basis of the following criteria:

- An influential figure who made a significant impact on the way the game is played on the field.
- An influential figure who remained involved in and made significant contributions to the game off the field.
- A hero or an icon who served as an inspiration for others (cricketers as well as the general public) and will be remembered for years to come.
- Remember that a legend is defined not merely by cricket records but also by aura, impact and legacy.

Battle 25

Brian Lara (batsman, all-time leading run-scorer, highest individual test innings)

versus

Sachin Tendulkar (batsman, all-time leading run scorer and centurion in ODIs, most test centuries)

This battle will close after 12 hours (or earlier if it's a no contest IMO) with a lead of at least 5. Otherwise, it will close after 24 hours.

Both are close quite close to each other where the cricket is concerned and opinions may vary who is the better player among people. However, where the bigger legend is concerned, Tendulkar is ahead. The mood of a nation used to change depending upon whether Tendulkar got a century or a low score in the 90s. Looking at it a few years and decades from now, the answer might be different and a lot of it may depend upon the legacy the cricketers finally leave when they quit the game, the impacts they have in their post cricketing career (if at all) and many other factors but as things stand, Tendulkar edges it for me.

I'll go with Lara, I think the big scores just, and I mean only just, outweigh the unbelievable status Tendulkar holds in India. Very close.

If we were comparing them solely as batsmen I may have rated SRt ahead but s Legends its Lara for me. Years from now people will still remember him for his many batting records.

Yeah I'd go with Lara, just barely, for that reason. This is the battle of the Legends. Lara with his big scores would slightly edge the "legendary" status.
