Battle of the Legends

Tendulkar.
Lara's 501 was made in a dead County match. His 400 was a totally selfish innings, no team needs to bat over two and a half days and make 750 runs. Had he declared a session earlier the West Indies would have had a much better chance of winning the match.

And u r conveniently ignoring the other test batting records tht he has to his name that r only matched/surpassed by Bradman. Ex: most runs in an over, 2nd most doubles, most scores of 150 or more, 1st and 2nd highest test scores, most test series with 500 or more runs (7) etc etc etc. This debate is not about who is the better batsman but whose feats on the cricket field (particularly tests) made him the more legendary batsman.

Of course, Tendulkar doesn't hold any records of his own. 8-) Anyways, a legend is made up of much more than records IMO.

Bit surprised by the result. I guess you would have to live in India to appreciate the legend of Tendulkar.

We shall define a legend of cricket on the basis of the following criteria:

- An influential figure who made a significant impact on the way the game is played on the field.
- An influential figure who remained involved in and made significant contributions to the game off the field.
- A hero or an icon who served as an inspiration for others (cricketers as well as the general public) and will be remembered for years to come.
- Remember that a legend is defined not merely by cricket records but also by aura, impact and legacy.

Battle 26

Bill O'Reilly (leg-spinner, considered by Bradman as the finest bowler he had seen, later columnist)

versus

Jagmohan Dalmiya (BCCI administrator, led the global commercialization of cricket in the 90s)

This battle will close after 12 hours (or earlier if it's a no contest IMO) with a lead of at least 5. Otherwise, it will close after 24 hours.

O'Reilly. Hopefully I'll be excused for being skeptical of administrators, 1990s ones no less, as 'legends'.

Tiger was a peerless bowler, though - easily Australia's finest between the wars. Am tipping him to make quarters.
