Amazing match it seems, one wonders why Foxtel showed whatever crap it shows on the third sports channel and not this.

They have the golf on, live. They tend to avoid showing the same sport on two channels, especially when they have other live sporting events which they can cover, and the test series in South Africa is on.

we just narrowly escaped with that one...we really have to be more efficient in all three areas(that too in the same game!) to have any chance of competing in the world cup....

Looks like we have an Asad Rauf of our own. Can you be any more clueless?

Hope Bravo's fine.
Most Indian umpires are very poor.. It has mostly to do with the problems ailing the development of umpires in our country due to neglect by the BCCI.

Great game, certainly got my money's worth (even though I didn't really pay :p). Our batting was sensational especially in the last 10 overs in which we scored 112 runs. Even though our fielding wasn't top class, but there was a buzz of energy in the field because of the youth. When Yuvraj comes back it'll be even stronger. Zaheer's bowling was quite commendable going at a run rate of 4.80 on this pitch and picking up 2 wickets. Even though Tendulkar failed to impress with the bat, he got the crucial breakthrough with the wicket of Lara. Had Lara stayed, West Indies would quite possible have snuck a victory. Shiv's innings was one of the best ODI innings I have watched while chasing.

Overall good match.

Phew, that reminds me of 1st ODI vs. Pakistan 2004.
That was one of the most exciting one day games. I didn't watch the game but this can't be any where close to that game (which I know you are not saying). The Chanders inning may have reminded you of that game..

Feel sad for Chanders.

This game does show how crucial it will be for the team that wins the world cup to have very good bowlers. On flatter tracks, quite a few teams will be able to make a lot of runs. However, not many teams will have the bowlers who can prevent that - particularly by taking wickets on the dead wickets.

Even the best of bowlers get belted on many of the dead surfaces ODIs are played on these days. I think on those surfaces, batting and pacing of a chase are far more crucial than bowling, because those pitches tend to equalize bowlers and an Ambrose can go for 70+ all the same as a Dwayne Smith.

My point was more to stress on the importance of taking wickets in high run scoring matches. Chasing and pacing are crucial on dead pitches but even more crucial is a bowler who can be effective even on dead pitches. A Wasim Akram who could make the ball talk on the deadest of pitches would be invaluable to a one day side and could be the difference between two teams who have superb batsmen.

A lucky escape for india i think, even after scoring 338 you would have to back india to win it, but Chanderpaul played really well and taking them just 15 runs from victory is a big achievement. This is going to be one hell of a series by the looks of it, i would predict windies to win this one-day series as they have got really big attacking batsman in their line-up.

My two cents:

1) Kinda surprised that India did not pick Ramesh Powar or the allrounder Joginder.....haven't seen Joginder but given that he's a pace bowling allrounder and Pathan's problems, I would have been tempted to play him, give him as many games as possible and see whether he's really cut out for that no 7 spot at international level.
2) India don't have a great pace attack but they do have good spinners - it's no coincidence that the three Indian bowlers with the best economy rates are Kumble, Harbhajan and Powar.
I personally think spin is an under rated commodity at ODI level....If I were India, I'd be looking to play 2 spinners in every game....it's their strength and generally most opposition teams do not play spin all that well.
3) Finally Gambhir got a game......amazed he didn't get a chance in RSA when you consider he did bat quite well in the A team tournament in Australia last year.

Wasim Akram is a once in a lifetime bowler though. As in, Pakistan would do exceptionally well to find a bowler as great in my lifetime. It's also worth noting that Wasim retired in 2003 and flat wickets have gotten even flatter since then, as evidenced by the Aus-NZ series a year and some back and the Aus-SA epic.

The fact is that even very good bowlers get tonked on very dead pitches. And there are a lot of very dead pitches in the world today. Taking wickets in ODI cricket on those pitches is more down to using the new ball and the batsmen playing poor shots than to bowling superbly. There's only so much you can do on an easy pitch with no seam movement and with no reverse swing about. Line and length? Predictable. Bang.
