Nah, this was clearly poor wording on my part. What I meant by extenuating circumstances was something which caused the game to be stopped. If there was a crowd riot or an injury to the batsman coming in, the umpires would stop play and the batsman couldn't be dismissed timed out. That's a different situation from everyone standing around for three minutes while Ganguly put his pads on, unless the umpires see that as a situation where they should stop play, which they didn't.

Just to quote the law for reference:

"Time being called" is your allowance for "common sense" which people are talking about. As I understand it, the umpires can call time at any point where they feel the game has been interrupted and cannot continue. If they don't do that, which they didn't, then Ganguly was definitely out if the appeal was made.
Yeah, I understand what you mean, now. In the end, the umpires perhaps should have stopped play, and then it would have been a much neater resolution, rules wise. In the long run though I can't say I'm terribly unhappy with the outcome, providing the umpires were solely responsible for the confusion.

Tipping India to win. Pitch is opening up, and I reckon the Indian bowlers will be on their game.

Can anybody please enlighten me what has happened to the game ?? Are they playing for a draw or run making has become very tough?

There should be an award, that is for the worst shot of the week.
I agree actually. In fact, we could have several "real" cricket awards. Only problem is, the judges would have to have access to every match played at international level in the week (or at least all the dismissals) and that isn't really practical without some serious organisation.

I can only see South Africa breaking this partnership and then taking control of the game or India batting on and ensuring a draw. They won't be able to get enough runs on the board with enough time to win the test at this rate. How many good sporting declarations has Dravid made anyway? I just remember him leaving Tendulkar stranded on 194.

Harris is painstaking to be honest. So sick of defensive left arm spinners. Thank god for Monty.
