My team:

Fire Knights CC

GC Smith O
Don't think he has confirmed he is playing, has he?

Desperately needs elbow surgery but if he does have that, I don’t think he will be fit for the 20/20 WC. So he may feature in both tournaments and then have the op at the end of June.

Which teams do you guys support in IPL and why ?
I really just support the English and South African players. My side before last years tournament was the Royals and if Smith, Morkel, Tyron, Dmitri et cetera turn out, then I will support them again. Also like Warney and Watto. :)

Well, Justin Langer is leaving to play for some English county side. So, its likely that Smith will be asked to play by the team mangement. I guess the tournament taking place in RSA gives him another reason to play.

which international players are available for the whole tourney?
The New Zealanders, Lankans and South Africans are available for the whole tournament. The Australians will leave a little later in the series and the English/West Indians, a lot later.

Kings XI Punjab (Lee, Marsh, Hopes, Sarwan, Bopara, Taylor- already injured) and Kolkata Knightriders (Ponting, Gayle, Dave Hussey and possibly Hodge) are affected worst, while Deccan Chargers (Symonds), Rajasthan (Shaun Tait, Shane Watson) Bangalore Royal Challengers (Pietersen, Bracken) and Chennai Super Kings (Flintoff, Hussey) will miss their key international players.

Let's assemble some post-departure teams, shall we? Kings XI Punjab may then have to bank on Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Pommersbach and that new Aussie pacer who won't get a game for Australia. Royals can have Tyron Henderson and Morne Morkel. Kolkata will still have McCullum and Mendis, but , actually, will have to depend on overseas rookies.

I'd like to know how the international rookies will fare, particularly Ryan McLaren. Some of them come in as T20 specialists.

I'm not convinced about Ashraful. He's far too erratic and throws his wicket away too soon. Maybe they can bring in local batsman Rahane in place, and have Kyle Mills or Dilhara Fernando as the fifth bowler. Mills will give you some extra lower-order runs, while Dilhara can bowl fast, and hopefully, will keep a tight line and length.

Seven bowling options in this team? One specialist bowler (particularly Munaf or Trivedi) should be dropped for that extra batsman. There should be some place to sneak in Atul Sharma, given the hype about him.

Is Maharoof available? Then he can make it ahead of Sangwan/Yo Mahesh, while a local can replace Dilshan.

So Katich is not in the Australian squad? Strange. Sreesanth will be out of this season's IPL due to an injury. We might see that rookie Australian pacer or some new Indian pacer in this team.

Maybe both Mortoza and Mendis. They surely will have a problem assembling their team, though I'd like to see both Bangar and Shukla in the XI.

Fleming is now coach, and I'm not sure he'll be playing this season. Vijay may open and Dhoni may come in higher up.

Joshi back again? Now that's a disappointment. And how on earth does Tinu Yohannan (that gentle medium-pace giant from Kerala who was phased out after three Tests and three ODIs) make an IPL team? There's Vinay Kumar, a seam-up bowler who can score a few quick runs, and there's offie Raghu, primarily a number four batsman for Karnataka, good enough to replace these has-beens. They will struggle again, given their lack of quality domestic players.

They're stuck with Dwayne Smith as an all-rounder, but they too will struggle to make a complete XI, and will struggle due to lack of decent Indian options.

Is Bravo available for the most part of the tourney? If so then that would help MI a lot!

Btw, I have assembled the 11s from the names that I recognized quickly .... and I assume players will be rotated so there would be a lot of combinations

5 international players in there.

My CSK XI would be:

Hayden
Vijay
Raina
Dhoni [Wk / C]
Morkel
Badrinath
Flintoff [Thushara or George Bailey after Flintoff leaves]
Gony
Ashwin
Murali / Ntini
Tyagi / Amarnath

This might not be the best line-up possible but it is a balanced one.

The Royals take on South African franchise the Cape Cobras today. The game is on South African and Indian TV.

The Cobras side is minus Smith, Gibbs, JP Duminy, Claude Henderson and Charl Langeveldt, so not the greatest of opposition for the Royals but apparently the crowd at Newlands is going to be good.
