South Africa team selection

I didn't say he is good enough for SA. Just he looks decent and seems to be a test specialist. Referring to potential SA players especially youngsters I'm a big fan of Reynard van Tonder and Jordan Hermann. Especially for tests, I am a firm believer that a test batsman should be able to score massive scores. Both imo is better than Richards, not taking anything away from Richards just my opinion there are much better young players out there.
Birds only I think 23 now and In t20s and one dayers has a high strike rate the problem is in the wp the only allowed 5 Caucasian players him and Daniel Smith have a lot of potential IMHO atleast to be tried in sa A team the issue is also that most of the players hogging the provincial teams are Caucasian batsmen also most of the non take up the 6 bowling slots especially when it comes to African players very skewed in a particular order division 1 could even use an extra team made up of these guys or better draft system I'm sure some could make North West team or kzn inlands team on loans.

Now it's all about the road to CWC 27 , which we will be hosting. I would really like for us to start building for that project now, the current crop of players who most likely won't be a part of CWC 27 are guys like Van Der Dussen, Bavuma , Reeza Hendricks, David Miller, Tabraiz Shamsi , QDK (Retired), Klaasen (Touch and go) ..
All these players will be 36 or older come the next WC and must be phased out by the Champions Trophy 2025 latest.

So that leaves Markram, Jansen, Coetzee , Rabada, Phehlukwayo, Ngidi, Maharaj (Think he can make it cause of his fitness and off spinners tend to last longer) from the current WC squad that I feel we should build the team around ..

The pressing issues for me is to groom a captain for CWC 27. A wristspinner to take over from Shamsi. Some top order bats and a batting all rounder , fast bowling is pretty much covered I expect Nortje to be around for CWC 27 aswell.

Some players who should be given more opportunities right now in 50 over cricket : Donovan Ferreira, Kyle Verreynne, Dewald Brevis, Wiaan Mulder, Tristan Stubbs , Bjorn Fortuin, Tony De Zorzi, Ethan Bosch , Jordan Hermann, Ryan Rickleton , Mihlali Mpongwana, Senuran Muthusamy, Junaid Dawood (Wristspinner) ..Also hope issues with George Linde can be resolved
Fortuin is very average IMHO and Peshi very overrated hasn't become a top already and won't. Nandre burger as a leftie is still young enough re fast bowler .

Fortuin is junk. And peshi.
The keyword is realistically , Fortuin was very close to making this WC and his raw stats in a few appearances he has made for SA will ensure he gets more game time , he averages 29 with the ball in odi cricket which is currently better than Maharaj and Shamsi's bowling avg so naturally he'll be thought of as the successor should SA move away from these two , and Phehlukwayo I think could get in because we have a shortage of all rounders , also no point sugarcoating it , you do need to consider that SA will want to adhere to transformation guidelines..if i could pick who I wanted my side would look different, but again I'm guided by the realistic aspect of the discussion.

Seeing John Reid pass away recently & only 2 players remain playing test cricket from the 1940s & 1 being South Africa's John Watkins (currently the oldest living test player & I can think of SA's Norman Gordon & Lindsay Tuckett also holding that most recently before their passing) & the other Australia's Neil Harvey. I thought it interesting to see how many players pre-isolation from South Africa are still alive.

235 players played test cricket for SA before isolation. 21 are still alive. By cap number , year of birth + year of test debut.

174. John Watkins (born 1923) (debut 1949)
175. Ronald Draper (born 1926) (debut 1950)
198. Peter Carlstein (born 1938) (debut 1958)
202. Colin Wesley (born 1937) (debut 1960)
207. Harry Bromfield (born 1932) (debut 1961)
208. Kim Elgie (born 1933) (debut 1961)
209. Goofy Lawrence (born 1932) (debut 1961)
210. Peter Pollock (born 1941) (debut 1961)
212. Sydney Burke (born 1934) (debut 1962)
213. Buster Farrer (born 1936) (debut 1962)
218. Graeme Pollock (born 1944) (debut 1963)
222. Derek Varnals (born 1935) (debut 1964)
224. Mike Macaulay (born 1939) (debut 1965)
225. Ali Bacher (born 1942) (debut 1965)
227. Richard Dumbrill (born 1938) (debut 1965)
228. Mike Procter (born 1946) (debut 1967)
229. Pat Trimborn (born 1940) (debut 1967)
232. Dennis Gamsy (born 1940) (debut 1970)
233. Lee Irvine (born 1944) (debut 1970)
234. Barry Richards (born 1945) (debut 1970)
235. John Traicos (born 1947) (debut 1970)

* My dad knows Ron Draper quite well from club cricket at Kimberley CC when. He was the club captain when my dad came into the team. Ex EP rugby/cricket player Gavin Cowley's uncle.

** Some other interesting things. Kim Elgie was a dual international. Played international rugby for Scotland. Harry Bromfield was the last SA spinner to get a 5-for in SA until Paul Harris did it in 2009 v Australia at Newlands.

*** Buster Farrer was known to be roy of the rovers in East London. Played internationally in cricket and hockey plus represented Border in tennis, bowls, golf & squash.
Sadly, Peter Carlstein passed away recently:

I knew him in the early to mid 2000s when he was a specialist batting coach for a few of the WA players - Darren Wates and Steve Magoffin. I used to go to the WACA indoor nets for training when I was a student at the John Forrest Senior High School Cricket Accademy. "Carly" was there, he'd always call a spade a spade and didn't mess around. But he had a big heart too and if you worked hard he would have time for you.

He played First-Class cricket in South Africa and a handful of Test matches for South Africa. He moved to Perth, Western Australia in the early 1980s

Unfortunately in 1964, whilst on tour with South Africa in New Zealand, his wife and 3 of his 4 children were killed in a car accident in South Africa which was terrible.

This would be damn shame if this young Jewish lad gets canceled cause of politics, he's a real talent.
I do think the wise thing would be for a sportsman to keep quiet about their political views while actively playing.

I don't know how I would feel about the Proteas if Rabada or Ngidi came out and said they are Malema supporters and think EWC is a good idea, or if Shamsi came and said what Hamas did was great.

Cricket and Politics in South Africa is blurred lines way to often . ICC has a lot of rules and by laws not allowing political interference into the sport however here in SA it happens blatantly . Hope at one point enough will be enough .

They are people and citizens , last i checked we have freedom of speech and high value in human rights . They have the right to their opinion as well as the right to honor their heritage of culture . If you read the article he was speaking at a award ceremony Rising Star of the Absa Jewish Achiever Awards , that is in direct correlation to the subject . Just because it doesn't align with politicians views he needs to be silent ? Why then not scrap all cultural or heritage events of people that doesn't align with the majority rule , fine lines . No place in sport .

Where did I say he has no right to free speech?

I just said, probably wise not to express those views. Of course he can, but given the charged nature of the subject then there will be idiots who will call for him to be dropped from the side.

The whole thing is a free speech subject , not being able to speak your opinion or speak about the matters that affect you and your family and any hindrance to that is a subject of free speech . Saying it is wise to not speak openly in fear of retribution or that there is any retribution to a view or opinion is a question of censorship and free speech .

Hope the board does the right thing and move on to more pressing cricket matters .

To be honest I can only see this going one way, he gets removed as captain and excluded from the team for good PR on SA's stance on Palestine.

To be honest , hard to expect that from a 18 year old , especially if he's at an award ceremony celebrating his community.
