Worst fc record prior to test debut

Richard

Don't know if it was mentioned but one Viv Richards had an abysmal FC record coming into test cricket.
Yep, he averaged 32.18 from 44 FC matches prior to his debut.
I never knew that - very surprising
That's interesting indeed. I'd not call an average of 32.18 abysmal, but certainly far from suggestive of being Test-class.

I guess Richards was similar in that respect to Michael Vaughan. Picked for Tests at just the right time, and performances at domestic level looked-up at the immediate same time as performances at international started. From 1974/75 onwards, Richards averaged 46 for his WI territory (something which changed over his career, first it was combined Leeward and Windward Islands then it became Leeward alone), which was a few runs over his average for most of his Test career (41 - there were also 2 short spells in there in which he averaged 80, brief times in which he fulfilled the "second-best after Bradman" tag that some conferred on him). He also averaged almost 50 for Somerset, 47 for Glamorgan and a really pretty fantastic 59 in tour games.
