Is this really that true?

It's a massive exaggeration. Root was captain when he bowled a ton of overs in NZ and had a string of injury issues after that kept him on and off for a few years, but that was just as much down to dumb luck when he cut his hand open on that fishtank and other non root related issues.

Why was the bowler going along with it though? Bowling full and straight with no long off? Suspicious to say the least

Iffy all around considering who they were playing and the money being pumped into the States as a market. Even the ridiculous delay to come out for the Super Over felt off.
